So many jobs want North Americans! It's not fair..
Aussies, Kiwis, Brits, South Africans etc. etc. if
you know the frustration of this ostracision, give
me a hand and help me find a job..

Someone just left your hagwon or Uni? Know of an o
pening for a hard working, reliable and Aussie?
I don't have a strong accent, and I talk english real good Smile

Send me a PM with vacant jobs and help fight discrimination Smile

PS This was intended to be slightly tongue in cheek, but seriously I am looking
for work in Seoul, and I'd appreciate any help..

I will even bring Caramello Koalas / assorted Cadbury's chocolate / name your aussie treats for appropriately amazing information Smile
Cheers guys

mashimaro: judging by the overwhelming response, I think its safe to say that an aussie-friendly Korean employer doesn't exist. Neither does a American, canadian, british or Kiwi- friendly employers. In fact, there's not a single "friendly" employer anywhere in korea, they're all *beeps*.

I think you missed the point.. they don't have to be friendly, they just have to give me a job (rather than automatically giving to an North American because their accent is 'better')

Hey Mash,

I've recently arrived in Korea from Australia, and initially I was looking for jobs in Seoul, but found it really hard going.

I had a few different agents looking as well as my own e-mail campaign, but everyone came back with the same thing... I've got the wrong accent for Seoul try further out, and you'll have no problem.

I took the advice, and found the job options improved dramatically.

That's just my experience, but what really are the options for Australian's in Seoul? Are there any Australian's teaching in Seoul at the moment who can tell their story?

I've bumped into Australian teachers who talk with an American accent as a condition of their job, even out here in the sticks. Is that a standard practice for employment in Seoul/Busan?

Cheers

Good to hear from a fellow aussie happeningthang..
I think you're right, it may well be easier to find work outside of Seoul.

Unfortunately I've done the medium size city in thing in Korea, and I'm quite keen to be in Seoul.. Still I'll definitely consider a good job somewhere else.

If only I could get an interview with these 'North American only' schools, they could see that I don't have a strong accent, and I'm easy to understand Rolling Eyes

I'm considering Suwon, it's only an hour from Seoul and there seems to be a good group of foreigners there.

There seems to be a few non North Americans working in Seoul from this board.. so it's certainly no impossible...

I'm interested to hear how you get on with the job search. Good luck.

Yeah..I'm an Aussie who can pull off a very good American accent now(i think it is a Boston accent I do) but can fool every one in Australia. I've had 2 years to perfect it though and it always slips out. Basically go and meet the employer and talk in an American accent and if they are smart they will realize there should be no trouble.
In saying this though i had no trouble finding a job(I wasn't looking in Seoul though i suppose but i do know of australian people who teach in Seoul).

I posted earlier about Jinju, but as you have an interest in Seoul, give Jonathon Dozier a ring at Pagoda. He seemed a pretty straight up guy and honest to boot. They had a few positions available. Smile

Ha!

This is the same guy that tried to sell me on working a position to develop a multimedia curriculum and teach it to 2 different locations -- totalling mega hours in one week. All fine and dandy, right? Sure, but the whole time he's got this printout of the hours involved that we're looking at. It seemed like a dream -- not many hours for two locations -- working only 4 days a week with Fridays off. I was really interested!

That's when his Korean co-worker walks in a little late for the interview, and she says, "Why are you showing him the part-time schedule?"

At this point, his face drops and he tells her, "Talk to me in Korean!" He unhappily starts barking at her sheepishly in Korean, and she looks a little embarrased with strange, "What's going on?" look.

I ask to see the ACTUAL schedule. It has hours packed in for like 14 hours a day (including a few hours of splits and travel between locations in Kangnam and one further West near Hongdae). I was sort of shocked, and got up and cordially walked out. He new the interview was over after I found out the "REAL" hours.

Anyway, Josh walks me to the elevator and apologizes up and down, saying, "I'm so sorry. They expect me to get someone for this position and it's a really tough sell. Call me if there is anything I can ever do for you in Korea -- seriously -- call me."

Uhhh... ok.

Actually i'm still in korea, silly me..
I think nationality is secondary to appearance. if you're tall, fair haired and blue eyed, you're in- and the star attraction immediately for any teaching job here. Unfortunately i'm only 5"10, raven haired, brown eyed, and with the tanned skin tone of a Mexican... kinda cancels out all the superb teaching work i do....
