mashimaro: judging by the overwhelming response, I think its safe to say that an aussie-friendly Korean employer doesn't exist. Neither does a American, canadian, british or Kiwi- friendly employers. In fact, there's not a single "friendly" employer anywhere in korea, they're all *beeps*.

I know of a job in Jinju, good boss, can converse in English well, has an ad on Dave's. Look under teachers needed Geochang and Jinju. Mr.Shin, nice bloke. Very Happy

Hey Mash,

I've recently arrived in Korea from Australia, and initially I was looking for jobs in Seoul, but found it really hard going.

I had a few different agents looking as well as my own e-mail campaign, but everyone came back with the same thing... I've got the wrong accent for Seoul try further out, and you'll have no problem.

I took the advice, and found the job options improved dramatically.

That's just my experience, but what really are the options for Australian's in Seoul? Are there any Australian's teaching in Seoul at the moment who can tell their story?

I've bumped into Australian teachers who talk with an American accent as a condition of their job, even out here in the sticks. Is that a standard practice for employment in Seoul/Busan?

I think you're right, it may well be easier to find work outside of Seoul.

Unfortunately I've done the medium size city in thing in Korea, and I'm quite keen to be in Seoul.. Still I'll definitely consider a good job somewhere else.

If only I could get an interview with these 'North American only' schools, they could see that I don't have a strong accent, and I'm easy to understand Rolling Eyes

I'm considering Suwon, it's only an hour from Seoul and there seems to be a good group of foreigners there.

There seems to be a few non North Americans working in Seoul from this board.. so it's certainly no impossible...

Yeah..I'm an Aussie who can pull off a very good American accent now(i think it is a Boston accent I do) but can fool every one in Australia. I've had 2 years to perfect it though and it always slips out. Basically go and meet the employer and talk in an American accent and if they are smart they will realize there should be no trouble.
In saying this though i had no trouble finding a job(I wasn't looking in Seoul though i suppose but i do know of australian people who teach in Seoul).

I posted earlier about Jinju, but as you have an interest in Seoul, give Jonathon Dozier a ring at Pagoda. He seemed a pretty straight up guy and honest to boot. They had a few positions available. Smile

OP. Also try the satillite cities like bucheon, incheon, anyang, bundang etc. there are aussies teaching in seoul and around but your right the anti anything that isn't north american sucks.

Actually i'm still in korea, silly me..
I think nationality is secondary to appearance. if you're tall, fair haired and blue eyed, you're in- and the star attraction immediately for any teaching job here. Unfortunately i'm only 5"10, raven haired, brown eyed, and with the tanned skin tone of a Mexican... kinda cancels out all the superb teaching work i do....
