Oh goody a gaming topic.. :)
I recommend the advice of several posters on this thread, to follow the games, not the gimmicks. Both consoles are incredibly good at what they do and it's going to come down to what you're going to use the bloody thing for.
The racing games, I think that the PS2 has it completely covered, due to the strength of one existing game, and one up and coming. They are Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec and Gran Turismo 4. Any car nut worth his or her salt would have played this game to death. By far, the best racing simulator on any console, ever.
I'm also a big fan of strategy and RPG (think Final Fantasy), where the PS2 seems to have an advantage over the X-Box at this time. :)
However, I'll agree that the X-Box is the BEST solution for a PC-style multimedia machine for the lounge. This thing is amazing. Get it modded, load up a new interface, and you can access any share on your network. MP3's are a breeze with its BUILT IN Dolby Digital decoder (the PS2 only has DTS, but both have optical outputs) and you're set for a seriously fun machine. Swap out the harddrive, and you can borrow games, dump them straight to the harddrive then load them up at your own pleasure.
The X-Box just has so much potential, but only the really tech savvy types are making the most of it.
I'm tempted to pick up an X-Box when I get home, purely for the purpose of watching my DivX and downloaded clips onto the big screen in a no-fuss manner.

I have just the ps2. I'm not really into online gaming and I simply will not buy a console if I can't play Final Fantasy games on it, no matter how good the hardware is. Also the burned games in English at Yongsan are sweet - do they have burned English Xbox games? |

Another game worth noting is Tokyo Extreme Racer 3 which I had shipped over that came out six weeks ago. Surprisingly good and seems to be getting high marks. Good thing, since I shipped it over simply because of nostalgia from playing the earlier ones.

While the PS2 lacks the dedicated hardware, it can render it on the other processors. Much like bump mapping. The PS2 can't do it in hardware, but you can tell the processors how to do it, and thus it does. Having the Xbox include the hardware is easier, but that's a perk you get by coming out two years later. |

Also, you can load an emulator into a modded Xbox and play FF3/6 the best FF ever.
RPGs, the Xbox had come a long way and the only place I would say the Xbox lags still is racing. But hopefully with Namco's R Revolution and Need for Speed underground, it has gained some ground.
But obviously nothing beats the GT brand.
I don't have my xbox with me, but my friends are telling me nothing beats multiplayer Crimson Skies, and on the FPS front, xbox has the ps2 beat. |

Heck yeah, Madden could be the only video game ever made and I'd be happy...
My two roomies and I played 11 seasons of football in the first 4 months of our senior years of college. One guy was the Redskins, the other the Ravens, and I was the Broncos... every game of every season for 11 seasons... of course, I drafted Mike Vick, so he was like 34 by the time we stopped... could still fly though... |

I love the X-box. They have not even tapped the potential of that machine yet.
Halo, even after 2-3 years of being out, is still a great game. Believe it or not, I like those big controllers. They are comfortable for my hands.
PS2 has some good selling points, one of them being compatible with PS1 in games and controllers.
The first couple of shipments were shoddy and a lot of them had to be repaired or replaced. The X-box is a much sturdier system. |

I chose the PS2 back in August when I was looking around. The x-box and PS2 were roughly the same price at the time (x-box was around 20,000 more for a comparable ps2 system, not a big difference).
I decided on the PS2 because the stores have a much wider selection of PS2 games (there are also PS1 games, which also work on the PS2 if you want them). Related to this, most of my friends have a PS2 so I can trade my games or borrow them quite easily.
The short of it is the PS2 suits my needs and wants better than the x-box.
As for internet ready systems, PS2 does have internet ready systems for online gaming...it includes the online pack as an extra. Check out yesasia.co.kr and you will see (they are a bit more expensive)
Check out that PSX...whoooooaaaaa |

If only the Xbox had this, then the world would be a better place.
But it does have the mech game with the super controller. When the sequel comes out next month, I'm hauling the game and my existing controller to a PC room down the block that has a LCD projector and not leaving for a day. |

That game is no joke, my friend. For any of you that don't know, it's called Steel Battalion, and is indeed hardcore. It comes with a massive controller, that even has a covered eject button on it. You need to flip up the cover and hit the eject button if your mech is about to buy the farm. If you don't manage to do that in time your Xbox deletes all your saved games and you have to start from the beginning. That game is the shiznits. |

Massive controller, and foot pedals. I had mine shipped over from Japan 16 months ago, but rarely play it as even on my 27" TV the outside viewing window is uselessly tiny. Plus the long range combat aspect leaves much to be desired.
But I hope the second part is fixed in the sequel, and the first part is solved by playing the game on the LCD projector. |

From the Korea Herald, this shows how badly xbox is doing in Korea.
Sony Corp. reported yesterday that sales of the flagship PlayStation 2 in Korea jumped 21 percent year-on-year in December, further cementing its lead over the competing video game console, Microsoft's Xbox.
Sony Computer Entertainment Korea Inc., a subsidiary of the Japanese electronics giant, said that it sold 50,000 game consoles here last month, pushing the December total to 700,000 units.
Company executives acknowledged that year-end holiday shopping helped improve sales but said the pace nevertheless should continue.
"We expect total shipments of the PlayStation 2 in South Korea to rise to one million units by the end of June," said Kang Hee-won, a spokesperson for Sony?Ψs Korean affiliate.
The earnings was bad news for U.S.-based Microsoft Corp., which introduced the competing Xbox game console here in December 2002, ten months after the PlayStation's entrance.
Microsoft hoped to sell 150,000 Xbox units during its debut year, but only about 60,000 were purchased, according to industry figures.
Critics attribute the failure to sell in the Korean market to lackluster selection of games, poor marketing and internal struggles.
As the gap between the two game boxes widens, game experts say that Xbox is losing the ability to compete.
However, online gaming could either prove to be a turning point for Microsoft or another chance for Sony to solidify its already commanding lead.
Last year, both companies introduced online gaming services, allowing gamers to play against each other via the Internet. With two-thirds of Korea subscribed to broadband Internet, both companies see untapped potential in the service.
According to the latest available data, there were 4,000 concurrent users for Xbox Live by the end of December and 10,000 users for PlayStation 2's online gaming service by the end of September.
The nation's video game market on the whole was worth 3.8 trillion won in 2002 and is expected to nearly double to 6.2 trillion won by 2007. |
