I have not been a member of this board for very long, I have only posted a couple times. However, it seems that there is a large amount of negative things said about Korea. |

Well yeah... there ARE a lot of negative things to address, acknowledge, work with, dealwith/live with - in K land
better for people to know beforehand - go somewhere else - or what they will encounter when arriving/living there
these threads are good for some awareness of the situations |

one of the purposes of this board is to whine and bitch about things we can't deal with, don't understand... etc etc etc
having others say "hey this happened to me too, try this.. etc" is one of the reasons we bitch and whine, this way we get useful suggestions and hints on top of being able to vent to a mostly sympathetic audience.
think of it as very therapeutic.. on online shrink's chair, except we're not paying some quack 400 dollars an hour to "listen to us talk about our problems". |

You're pretty profound, today, bogey. I swear, your post should be in the FAQ. |

The constant stream of negativity from some posters is a form of self-pity. Remember the old adage: Misery loves company? This site is a good example of it. Unable to adjust to a new culture, many people insist on dwelling on their discomfort and broadcasting it, looking for reinforcement and validation.
By remaining at the level of whining they don't have to admit they have culture shock and do the work necessary to get over it.
We recently had a thread that illustrates just how pathetic it can get around here: My god! There's dirt on the carrots! Are these people barbarians? It was classic. |

MAYBE:
Korea is a land of incompetent quack managers with cultural/social/sexual inferiority complexes, not to mention generalized emotional problems
AND
a certain amount of EFL'ers are over individualized weirdos with trouble adjusting in one of the most collectivist societies on earth.
It's not either/or. |

Yes it's quite negative, but sometimes it feels good to vent. You have to take it with a grain of salt. |

If you are a new teacher-Hopefully your time in Korea will be like a visit to Candyland. If not, you'll be glad you heard some of the warnings and wise advice given by some posters on this board. Start your time in Korea with your EYES WIDE OPEN.
If you are a Korean netizen troll - get a life. |

The amount of negativity on here is just crazy..
I don't know how people can constantly moan so much and then still go on living here..
Sometimes you'd think Korea was hell on earth from reading some of the threads here.
Korea has some flaws yes, but not any more than most other countries. The pro's of living in Korea far outweigh the cons for me and also for almost all of my friends I have met here..
Enough said!! |

Yup. When I worked in Busan & Daegu, Dave's would be the place to visit so that I could get a daily affirmation. It's not me but them!
Years later, I can look back and just chuckle at the misery both self induced and self proclaimed. |

Sometimes, it's just a desire to feel that you're not alone going through some of the crap that you get put through here. If you happen to be the only foreigner in your general vicinity, you're going to have an even harder time finding someone to gripe to. There's a cathartic feeling one gets just from being able to share in common experiences.
My personal belief is that those who complaining about "whining" are essentially people who have no concept of ever dealing with adversity themselves because nothing has changed their world view. Oh, they think they have gone through it, but they rarely have. Things have generally worked out for them and they can't stand the sight of anyone else complaining about something because it doesn't personally affect them.
Yeah, there's a lot of complaining on Dave's, but just because a lot of people complain doesn't mean that there's not a rationality behind it. There is a lot of illogical behavior that happens in this country. It does. Sometimes, just pointing it out makes one feel better. Yet, there are those here who seem to blow a gasket any time ANYONE challenges their world view of "everything's perfect", which is exactly the same thing they complain about when they point out the whining.
When someone complains constantly and has been doing it for awhile, then it's probably time for that person to start thinking strongly about leaving. There's temporary misery, and then there's masochism. When it crosses over into the latter, it's either time to move on or learn to enjoy the pain. |

This has been the same in my experience. I don't think Korea is perfect but I enjoy being here. The same can be said for the vast majority of people I know and have met in person. |

I think saying "Korea is not perfect" is a bit of an ole. No country is perfect, some are better to work in than others. |
