I've just had a discussion with my american co-worker (education degree and MBA) who is insisting that only the northern polar region of the globe is frozen. Apparently, the south pole is hot, which is why australia and africa are such warm places.
Somebody please please PLEASE tell me most americans do NOT believe this...... I've never had much faith in the american education system but... really??? |

no, it's really warm, the south pole is the purtruding end of an ice-lolly(popsicle) stick and the ice it is stuck in is merely just the popsicle part itself.....the antarctic doesn't officially begin until you get slightly north of cape town  |

| Could be a misunderstanding. The North Pole is floating ice, the Antarctic is actually land with snow and ice on top of it. If not, that's sad. I'm pretty sure there are American's on Antarctica are there not? Or at least they're there part of the year. |

Now THAT is a book i need to track down. I was right into the whole jules verne, edgar rice burroghs (spelling?) genre at one time, but never came across this one. Cool.

Your co-workers are technically correct. That you doubt them, criticize the entire American education system, and have obviously not done 2 minutes of research says more about you than anyone else.
Antarctica is home to many volcanoes. Many are dormant and some are active. Volcanoes are hot. |

No. That's not what the OP said at all, and his co-worker is NOT technically correct.

Listen, Tool. According to the OP, he provides two things his co-worker said. Only the North Pole is frozen, and The South Pole is hot.
I've already addressed the South Pole being hot, as there are many volcanoes in Antarctica. If you want to argue the difference between South Pole and Antarctica, go ahead if that's all you got.
As for only the North Pole is frozen, look at the facts (which nobody has done yet here). The Arctic Circle landmass (and the North Pole ) is floating ice. In Antarctica (and the South Pole) it is ice on top of land. Look at any of the research and it will say that Antarctica is 'covered in ice." Sometimes very very deep ice, but still there's a difference between what it is and what's covering it. The actual Antarctica is bedrock and mountains.
If anyone has something else to add, then add it. I think the American co-worker is correct. And, if not proven correct, he/she (and I) at least provides a very strong case that no one has proven wrong here. |
