Бердымухаммедов and Turkmenistan generally ... that is a bit of a stretch!

Arrow If ever there was an example of a sensible and moderate fusion between socialism and islam, he and Turkmenistan would be my first example of how it can work.

They are all dead or out of power.

But there is little fusion. Bearded islamists in Turkmenistan seem to disappear without a trace, and islamist parties are banned.

looking at all these dictatorships, what is immediately obvious about the majority of them is that they survive because they have something the more powerful nations want- resources.

The US (and others) are happy for them to continue, so long as they can keep getting a cheap supply of oil or minerals out of them.

Widescale human rights abuses... is not a fatal mistake. Stopping access to their resources...would be.
