Бердымухаммедов and Turkmenistan generally ... that is a bit of a stretch!
If ever there was an example of a sensible and moderate fusion between socialism and islam, he and Turkmenistan would be my first example of how it can work. |

But there is little fusion. Bearded islamists in Turkmenistan seem to disappear without a trace, and islamist parties are banned. |

looking at all these dictatorships, what is immediately obvious about the majority of them is that they survive because they have something the more powerful nations want- resources.
The US (and others) are happy for them to continue, so long as they can keep getting a cheap supply of oil or minerals out of them.
Widescale human rights abuses... is not a fatal mistake. Stopping access to their resources...would be. |
