Netherlands runs out of criminals, has to shut prisons
Posted by Cory Doctorow, May 27, 2009 10:13 PM
The Netherlands (where most <s>most drugs are</s> cannabis is legal) has so few criminals that it is now faced with the choice of shutting down its prisons and laying off the staff, or importing criminals from other countries like Belgium on a contract basis:
During the 1990s the Netherlands faced a shortage of prison cells, but a decline in crime has since led to overcapacity in the prison system. The country now has capacity for 14,000 prisoners but only 12,000 detainees.
Deputy justice minister Nebahat Albayrak announced on Tuesday that eight prisons will be closed, resulting in the loss of 1,200 jobs. Natural redundancy and other measures should prevent any forced lay-offs, the minister said.

A country that has to close prisons because they don't have enough criminals?! What an ideal situation! It's like a Gotham that no longer needs Batman... |

I always thought Holland had an ideal country system and culture. It's liberal and easy going from a perspective of not being too judgemental in negative light of being human with a police force actually there to help the public; not condem them as criminals. You have to be a killer, rapist, arsonist, or terrorist to get in serious trouble in Holland, while in America, you only have to be at the wrong place at the wrong time to go down despite you being a good person who did nothing wrong other than smoke a few joints. Holland sets a fine example. Thumbs up. I'd love to live there for a while. Germany is really cool too. |

Can we send the gitmo people there?
Or, they should just turn the prisons into giant, dirt cheap hostels |

The problem in the U.S., are the cops who usually do not show restraint or common sense. They are sanctimonious and self righteousno.I have no axe to grind...just look at the amount of people arrested and sent to prison only to be cleared years later! I think the U.S. has one of the highest incarcerated rates in the world. And to go a step furtherthe senators/congress folks are at fault for allowing it to happen.
Toking on weed is not as bad as alcohol as the world knowsyet.cops will go asinine over it! |

Yes, Holland does sound like a good place to live, but so does this place:

EARTHS TWIN FOUND
Posted on Monday, May 18th, 2009
By Erik Van Datiken
HOUSTON, TX Amazed scientists have discovered two new planets 1,300 light-years away, and one of them is the exact twin of Earth in every detail.
Whats more, experts believe it may be inhabited by precise duplicates of every human being now living here on our own planet!
The discovery is thanks to the recent service mission to fix the Hubble space telescope. Noted astronomer Alexander Wolszczan of Pennsylvania State University stunned the world earlier this year with news that he had found two planets about 6 trillion miles from here the first planets ever known to exist outside our solar system.
At that time, he thought they were both much larger than Earth.
Since then, shocking new photos taken by the Hubble have been leaked to the press by an unnamed NASA source.
The top-secret pictures reveal that the smaller of the two newfound planets is so amazingly like ours that, when its shown side by side with pictures of Earth, even the most knowledgeable astronomer cant tell them apart. |

Then again, this could be where all of Holland's criminals are going.
Hmmm, this could be the solution to the Guantanamanamo problem. |

Love Holland. Spent about 5 months there. Working in tulip bulb packing factories.
They really got a good thing going there. Modern, green, liberal, aesthetic............do you know The Netherlands has virtually the same population density as Korea? You wouldn't know to look at the two places...... |
