Point taken sinisterbar.
That doesn't detract from the fact many posters have experienced ridicule for just being foreign. Do you think they are all paranoid nutjobs?
I'm all for giving people benefit of the doubt, but I have seen many instances of rudeness on behalf of some Koreans. |

Exactly, EDIT: for some reason I read the first post on this page as a response to me. Shouldve known it wasnt the case.
I think we all face a certain amount of ridicule. I know I went through more than my fair share of it in Japan, even with language ability.
Even in the US I got lots of poor reactions from Koreans on innocent (to me) questions.
What I'm saying is that it seems to me ( I was not there ) that this situation was made much worse by pressing the subject and playing into them.
-I dont know about living in Korea which is why I'm on my way over-
That being said in all of my experiences with hostile local groups when you continue to react to them, all be it their silence, or vocal taunts, you play directly into their hands.
Bullies dont like friends in any place. Why not act all friendly and take it to the next level to embarrass them. Smile, laugh with them, sit next to them. Go ahead buy them a beer, you clearly have the language ability to belittle them 12 times over in a pleasant conversation. The spectators become the referees, let the rest of the people see you as a hero rather than an overactive foreigner dumping the usual insults. Hit them where they dont expect and destroy their confidence to do it again.
I fully believe the antagonist won in your situation.
My point is show your intelligence through adaptability. You only hurt yourself in blatant retaliation, take the fight to their trenches so if you die you take them with you.
Its not that you were wrong, its how you win in the eyes of those around you. |

Interesting ideas. To be frank, that Korean guy walked off looking quite embarrassed. I was there and it is safe to say I won. |

Did you give that to the people in question in the OP? |

Well at least the blokes here are nicer than in Yemen.
9 Foreigners abducted- including South Korean was the headline.
I don't know about you, but I haven't heard any stories lately about abductions at gunpoint/possible beheadings.
So on the scale of things two guys snickering at you aint so bad.
Lighten up!
Some of the countries have experienced recent multiple major foreigner abductions/murders include:
Yemen, Somalia, Colombia, Mexico, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, Lebanon.
I'm sure there are some others too.
That's right- on the scale of real crap thrown people's way Korea does better than Yemen, Somalia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Lebanon...ooo let's throw Sudan in there too.
Not to mention the rudeness one encounters in jolly old England sometimes... |

I think they may have felt upset about their fellow brethren in faith being murdered in the millions by the US. |

Sort of like one country could be upset about millions of its ethnic kindred being killed in a war by the U.S. say, from 1950-1953? (Which btw, I don't have a problem with because I was born into a world of opportunity rather than a world for 'Dear Leader'.)
Or maybe some of their ethnic kindred being abducted and beheaded? BTW were the Koreans involved in this incident responsible for the 'murder of millions' that you describe?

I await your enlightened response about how the Koreans suck at treating foreigners. |
