I'm worried about personal files being looked through if I bring one of my portable hard drives and my laptop.
Laptop is going on the plane for sure, but should I worry about the hard drive? Or should I just mail it? |

So long as your hard drive doesn't contain a bomb, you do not need to concern yourself. If carrying a laptop, they will ask you to set it aside and turn it on for a quick examination. |

I've heard of US border guards going through people's laptops at the border sometimes. |

Last summer I took took my Korean government-issued laptop to Canada and the Customs officer asked - if he looked, would he fine anything that shouldn't be there? I smiled and replied "No... do I look stupid?". He just looked at me with a deadpan expression and said "Ok, go ahead." Then I went to the U.S. and was delayed about 20 minutes at Customs while they examined the hard drive (I guess I looked stupid). |

I have, business users get hit especially hard when they get laptops back wiped.
I've personally seen laptops taken, just don't know what they are looking or care to look for. |

If you really want to be careful.
Are you familiar with a program called Winrar? It's a free zip program you can download. Create a zip file, collection of the files you want to store. It's usually used to condense space. But the password protection is pretty good. Letters + Numbers. Make sure it goes in a format like this: x#xxx#xx#. As long as the numbers are mixed within the body. Remember the password or your in trouble.
It takes a REALLY LONG TIME to get into it without one. (I sold computers for awhile. Not the best job in the world. But, it filled my head with what seemed like useless knowledge at the time, lol)
And then there's free folder lock programs you can download. That work much faster than having to zip collections of files. They work on master password systems. Eg: Put in a password. Open the program and unlock your folders. They're less secure than Winrar. But, they have a hidden feature. Unlike Rar files that hang around your desktop.
(Edit - But it really comes down to how 'Motivated' they are. With the Folder Protect. If you've got a huge chunk of free space taken up. And they search your computer and find only 4 folders. They're know the rest are hidden.) |

Don't worry, Korean customs doesn't check anything. You just hand them your customs card (with everything checked 'No') and walk through. |
