Did you know "The Windsor knot is a thick wide and triangular tieknot that projects confidence."?
What is your "knot of choice"?

I don't wear ties. What is the point of a tie? What kind of practical function does it actualy serve? It's just a stupid thing people do to try to be "professional" I'll wear a tie when I get into politics or become a businessman. Until then, no. |

depends on the collar. wide collar = double windsor. regular collar = four in hand |

Ties are sexy.
I go with the Windsor, almost every time. |

People generally don't wear ties to work unless their HR department tells them they're supposed to.
If you're an ESL teacher, don't wear a tie unless your students are. |

Yeah I guess ties are very common in Northeast Asia. Clothing is extremely formal for sure. I am just not into dressing formally unless I have to though, not my style.
In the US, I wear a tie maybe once a year tops. Do you all wear ties back home too? Or is this one of those "only in Korea" things, like sporting a pink shirt or a man purse? |

Details magazine says the four-in-hand knot is the only one you need. The full Windsor is for wide collars, something which isn't in vogue anymore.
I say the four-in-hand and the half Windsor are all you need.
That said, many guys are lazy and get those ready-wrapped ties that you simply take on and off. |

half-windsor. the windsor is too bulky and the four-in-hand gets messy and looks lopsided most of the time. the half-windsor looks neater than the FIH and isn't as bulky as the windsor |

I hate ties with a passion. I was a civil servant for a while in London and though we had a casual office policy, I did have to wear suit and tie when going on meetings and conferences and hated it to death. They have no actual purpose apart from decoration and uniformity and they make you feel constricted and look stupid (at least I feel stupid wearing one.)
Ties should be banned. I like wearing a suit though, but no effing tie. |

Agreed. It is a pointless piece of clothing that serves no logical purpose. It is just the mark of a corporate tool. |

In Korea, my company requires suits & ties for every man in the office between September-May. You can take the tie off in the summer months and wear a short-sleeved dress shirt (eww) if you want to.
In our US offices though, the only people wearing ties are the Korean branch managers and sales reps who are going out on sales calls that day. For everyone else, any collared shirt tucked into a pair of khakis will do. |

This reminds me that on my first visit to the UK, one of my favorite things to do was sit in the window of my friend's flat with my morning coffee and watch the smartly dressed guys walk past on their way to work. At the time, even though I lived in New York (where there's no shortage of suits and ties), there was something that just seemed sharper and more fashionable there.
Ties aren't completely useless. Creepy tourist girls in third story windows could have been admiring you, all that time. |

No, no, no, no, no, no! Windsor or nothing! I hate half-assed knots!
My roommate goes out with his tailor-made suits and shirts but is clueless about the details and always leaves a messy, loose, half-Windsor hanging around his neck ruining everything.
The Windsor is only bulky if you buy crappy ties. A high-quality tie will knot down nice and firm and compact. It'll shape well, it'll create a nice twin peak 'n valley up front and it'll fill the collar wings nicely. |
