I'm trying to make a list of bad Konglish. Can someone help me complete the list? It also makes for a good lesson or starter of the day in class (i.e. "Bad Konglish of the day"). Some of them are quite hilarious and goofy.
Autobike - motorcycle
Back mirror - rearview mirror
Cider - Sprite/7up
Coach - assistant coach
Deep kiss - making out
Diary - daily planner
Dunk shoot - a dunk, slam dunk
Fighting! - doesn't make sense in the way Koreans use it
Handle - steering wheel
Handphone - cell phone
Hot dog - corn dog
Hunting - picking up women
Kiss mark - hickie
My condition is not good - I don't feel good
O-bite - throw up, puke
One shot - we are expected to drink the whole shot in the States anyways, otherwise "bottoms up" for beer
Open car - convertible
Panty - underwear (Konglish meaning is also for men)
Rinse - conditioner (hair)
S line - curves
Service - "It's on the house"
Set - combo (fast food)
Sharp - lead pencil
Syndrome - this is supposed to mean like a popular tv show or drama, what's a good word to use ? Can't think of one right now
T panty - thong
Talent - tv personality/actor/actress
Toast - omelet sandwich
Training pants - sweat pants
V line - no such thing I don't think
Y shirt - dress shirt
What am I missing?
T panty and dunk shoot crack me up for some reason |

Some things you might want to consider prior to correcting your students.
1. "Cider" is the name given to the drink produced by Lotte. It's no crazier or senseless than "Sprite" or "7up."
2. What's wrong with "Kiss Mark"? I've heard it used in the US.
3. What's bad about "Set"? It makes sense to me.
Others I would agree/disagree with to a lesser degree. I'd suggest you change the title of your lesson to something other than "Bad Konglish." A lot of Konglish makes sense even if it seems a little weird to us. Perhaps just introduce your lesson as Western terms vs. Konglish terms. |

meeting- You have these at work not with your friends in front of the cinema.
Try "I'm meeting friends tonight" not "I have a meeting"
appointment- this is a prearranged meeting with a dentist or doctor, not with your friends in Starbucks. |

Seems cider is used in general for any type of drink that resembles Sprite, in the same way we say "coke" to mean anything like Coca cola. It's not a cider in any way, so I think the name is derived from a English misunderstanding (just a guess though).
Never heard kiss mark, sounds strange because a hickie is made from sucking not kissing.
Set makes sense, but so do a lot of other things. I've never heard anyone refer to a fast food combo as a "set." A lot of them make sense, but in the context or what their used as doesn't fit. |

Some of the terms aren't necessarily Konglish -- they're slang. The terms may have been fossilized by former English teachers or imported from English speaking countries.

Cider can be confusing. Cider is an alcoholic beverage made from fermented apples (British English).
However, Americans and some Canadians sometimes use "cider" to refer to apple juice. To make matters more confusing, in North American some people refer to "cider" as hot cider. |

I don't agree that all of those are "bad Konglish." Like others have said, some of them make sense. One that I just encountered the other day is using the word "hip" to mean "butt." That confused me for a while.  |

Hunting - picking up women This is used as slang by some people in North America
Talent - tv personality/actor/actress I've heard this in plenty of contexts in English.
Training pants - sweat pants same with this
V line - no such thing I don't think V neck?
T panty - thong This is used throughout asia, including malaysia, china and japan.
Autobike - motorcycle This is used throughout asia as well.There is also a motorcycle website from the UK with the name "Autobike" there are no cars on the site.
My condition is not good - I don't feel good This is a grammar issue, "I'm in bad condition", "he's in serious condition after his accident"

as am I, but I've heard it plenty.
I have NEVER heard them referred to as hot dogs. |

Not sure where in Canada you're from But ive never heard someone ask for a Hot Dog when they were referring to a "corn dog". Then again I rarely hear anyone say Corn Dog either. The most common term i hear is POGO when people want a "corn dog" which is a brand name. Just like how many people say I need a kleenex when they are referring to tissues. Or Popsicle when they want ice on a stick =p |

My bad. I forgot what a "corn dog" was. I was confused and thought "hot dog" and "corn dog" were referring to the exact same thing.
I too always say POGO. I never say "corn dog" when referring to a POGO. I find it very odd and would rather say "hot dog on a stick".
Sorry for my confusion in my post above. |

Lover- Koreans use it as a genderless form of boyfriend/girlfriend, when in English it has sexual connotations.
Running machine- treadmill
M Line- ? Something to do with a man's body, but I'm not quite sure what.
Company/campus couple- no English term; you'd have to say "two people at the same workplace/ university who are dating". Kinda awkward, but...
Enter the company- should be "get a job" |
