So I went to an open class today. It was at a mixed academic High School.
The highlights were:
-Foreign teacher wearing a pink cup as a pig's nose.
-Foreign teacher seemingly making it up as he was going along.
-Foreign teacher obviously suffers from severe ADD and narcissism.
-Absolutely no worthwhile English being taught for the whole lesson.
-The lesson plan was about "Nature" (?!!?) and the foreign teacher had a PPT with nothing but pictures he got from Google Images.
-Foreign teacher had to skip over the picture of two bucks gang-raping a deer.
-Foreign teacher made six or seven animal noises.
-Lesson had no structure whatsoever.
-Zero student engagement except laughter.
The kicker:
-My co-teacher leaning over to me and saying "his lessons are energetic and fun, you could learn something I think."

No! But he reminded me a lot of him (personality wise).
This guy was a lanky, twenty three year old from Colorado. He's been in the business for a year or so.
I wish I had a video of it.
Come to think of it... maybe this guy does belong in a Kindergarten. Not a High School. |

These open (demo) classes are usually videotaped. Ask your co-teacher to call his school and request a copy. |

This is many Koreans' idea of a perfect native English teacher. Act like an idiot/clown and they'll love you.
edit- Damn, I-am-me got in there first. |

Ahem... that was MY lesson you're making fun of.
Yeah, not really, but I'm sure he is on Dave's.
Dumb Korean expectations of good teaching for the foreigner. |

Unfortunately, none of this is difficult to believe. |

Yeah one look at Korean comedy on tv will tell you that this guy has a future. Wish I had seen it. |

Hey man, if you didn't like my lesson, you could have said something instead of just smiling the whole time. I put a lot of energy into it and there was LOTS of participation, except from you!
As for no structure, don't be so quick to judge. I mix things up so kids don't get bored. I make them WANT to learn!
Yes, I got my images from google and I made animal noises. I'm teaching elementary school kids! Cut me some slack. Sorry I wasn't wearing a tie!
You shook my hand and told me "great job!" after the lesson was done. Thanks a lot man... |

I don't need to bet, as I know which one stays. This is coming from a guy who's lost a job in Korea for simply doing his job--actually teaching something. |
