I know both the director and the producer of that CF since I do a lot of Commercial Films and have been in the industry for a couple of years.
I called the director and asked him to explain his motives behind the CF.
He gave me this message to give to all ESL teachers that worry about racism in his CF:
Get your butts back in class and teach English - leave the Commercial Films to us! |

Seriously? I guess there will always be some who fall for obvious and poor impersonators. It's amusing and yet disappointing. I mean backhand doesn't even try to pass himself for a real Korean. |
Stop showing up and making sense. I mean it this time. |
The problem with backhand is his schtick is old. He needs new material.
Newsflash backhand if you want to bash Korea and be effective at it don't use the same joke over and over and over and over and over.
Your image is now "Guy who says the same thing over and over and over and thinks he's funny when he's not." And not the image of an effective & entertaining social critic/comedian on Korean culture.
Backhand too dumb to write more than one joke.
Backhand repeat and repeat.
Backhand go to cave now.
Duuhhhh...understand???
How many backhands does it take to screw in a light bulb? Four- One to screw in the lightbulb, the other to take him to the hospital when he keeps on trying to screw it in, breaks the bulb, and then cuts his hand on the shards. Then two more because the next backhand will do the exact same thing.
On the other hand this guy might be a deep sock for some Korea apologist. Have some guy be so moronic and stale at bashing Korea that it delegitimizes the Korea bashers, kinda like (allegedly) MissSeoul in reverse.

I like the part at the end where everyone is gleefully gawking at the girl walking around without a pig nose. FREEEEEAK! |

Correct me if I am wrong but the ad was not filmed in korea (unless it's green screen). They have used a korean model as the main "actress" but it would only be logical to hire local extras rather than import/export koreans. What would have been racist is to only hire korean extras.

It was filmed in Sydney, as are many other Korean commercials, I can tell by the landmarks. What I wonder is how they sold this to the schmucks on the set ... Have any of you considered the fact that, in Korea, a pig is symbolic of good luck? |

Maybe should've call it the "Luck Flu" and we wouldn't have all this paranoia. |

A couple of commercials that caught my eye involved smelly feet and flatulence. The commercials were funny, but I noticed that only the foreigners in the commercials were portrayed as stinky, the Koreans were surprised and bemused--never mind the kimchee breath. |

I'm out of the country now, but do all of the ads on tv/subway stations still have those giant bobbly heads on people? I swear every product was being advertised by people with tiny bodies and giant heads in June-July. Dear lord I hated those things, they were totally grotesque. |

So you believe it's racist?
If it was a black model, Italian, Mexican?
The pig nose represents a power socket, did you notice them trying to plug it in. I am not saying it is a good ad, but it is hardly racist |

Do you remember when Cyon made a phone called 'Black & White' and they had a white chick and a black guy... Only he wasn't really a black guy, but instead a white guy PAINTED BLACK!? That was another major screw up in Korean advertising. I think they need a non-Korean person standing by at all times to say "Wait, no, that's going to by mocked by a lot of people..."
