I keep finding myself backing out of relationships. I suppose that might have something to do with going through a divorce 2 and half years ago. Oh, well. Otherwise, things are going great for me. |

Just for fun...as there are infinite answers to this ...speed is important...as are all the other factors when dealing with currents and water density...and sharks
The answer is 700m.
A swims at the speed of light and meets B at B's island...which happens to be 700m from A's island.
A now goes for a beer and a nap.
A then jumps into the water and passes B at the said 400m from island B...no time for chatting as A has other plans in mind.
A enjoys the rest of his day drinking beer and scoring chicks.
B is eaten by sharks.
The rest is...as the say...history...not math. |

A, B, C, D, and E are on side 1. They want to cross to side 2.
steps (minutes)
1. A and B cross to side 2 (3 minutes)
2. A returns to side 1 (1)
3. D and E cross to side 2 (12)
4. B returns to side 1 (3)
5. A and C cross to side 2 (6)
6. A returns to side 1 (1)
7. A and B cross to side 2 (3)
Now everyone is on side 2. It took a total of 29 minutes. |

I'm not laughing, I'm actually touched. You two crazies should get together. Imagine the offspring, craniums the size of beach balls. |

I got it in about 20 minutes. I didn't use any of your fancy equations, though. I just guessed and checked and narrowed in on 1700.
Here was my slow method:
The person swimming from a to b was going slower than the person going from b to a since going to a and back to the first meeting point (C) plus the distance from C to 400 has to be more than going from C to b and then 400. If the person swimming from a to b was going faster, it wouldn't make sense for it to take him more time to go from c to b then 400(d) than it would for the slower person to go from C to A to d.
I then set up some ratios for guessed distances between B and C. I started with 800. 700/800 = 1200/1800, nope. Second ratio is smaller. I did this for a while until I got 700/1000 or 7/10= 14/20 and found the distance from C to B. |

You used reasoning and a process called iteration. Fine methodology.
The others used simple algebra, but there's no need to include time, just distance and proportion.
There are required assumptions missing, however. You must assume that the swimmers swim non-stop at a constant speed. This should be in the setup or the problem has no solution. |

What? Where is the problem set up? No info.
With no info, the best answer is:
| Quote: |
A, B, C, D, and E are on side 1. They want to cross to side 2.
steps (minutes)
|
answer:
A, B, C, D, and E all go to side two.
One step. One minute.
What was the actual problem? |

ABCDEF X C = CDEFAB sometimes, but usually not true
123456 x 3 = 370368 for example.
