I just used the entire experience to land a 2nd interview at McDonald's!

lol.... banking extra buck ontop of school to go to Europe. I knew Korea would pay!

Sorry to burst your bubble, but getting a job back home has little to do with experience and a lot to do with schmoozing nowadays. I've known people who had zilch experience an a particular field land a good job because the "connected" with the interviewer. I also know of some engineers with years of experience who are working some jobs like McDonalds.

Thats true. I am amazed at how many people tell me they got the job through friends and family. I also know a guy with 20 years experience in the IT industry who was management lvl when he left the UK and couldn't find work in NZ, even though he got the immigration visa because he was in IT.

Also all my lecturers in this town tell me the same thing, you get the job by who you know, not what you know. Most students leave town to go home to find work and most locals have jobs, but many of thier employees are friends or family.

This would be the case if the person didn't have a degree- I don't know why most Koreans or "non-Korean" posters still persist in the old perception that most NES ESL teachers could only get a job at McDonalds.


On a lighter note, it is hiring season onbase and I just recently turned down 5 Korean and gypo applicants for jobs at my agency because they didn't have either the experience or the language skills required.

~ One woman cried and begged me to hire her, saying that she couldn't get a job at a Korean company because she was married and had two kids- not my problem and sounded like personal issues.

~ While a guy demanded a job based on the sole fact that he graduated from Seoul National University and had high TEOFL scores. When I asked him some technical questions about the job, he couldn't utter a single sentence. I threatened to call the MPs unless he left my office.

~ Yet another was a dependent of a full-bird Colonel who tried to press me to hire his half-breed son. I asked what kind of skills his son had related to the job and he said that it didn't matter because he is a military dependent. Thats when I showed him the regulations regarding the job and said that just being a military dependent only made him eligible for the job, it didn't guarantee him the job. Thats when he threatened to call General Bell to have him demand me to hire his son. I told him to go right ahead and I would press ethics charges on him for abusing his authority to try to press me to hire someone that was not qualified for the job.


Yeah, I hate it when I have to deal with unqualified people

I have to agree with the age old sentiments:

"It's about who you know, not what you know."

I went from fund account straight up to a manager because I knew the right people. Albeit, it wasn't exactly the greatest upgrade in wage, it was certainly one in esteem and title.

Right now I have a great job offer waiting for me in China because one of my co-teachers went to China to teach. She became head teacher there and we were great friends. The pay wage is the same as Korea, with housing provided and everything. Fully furnished apartment. When my contract finishes, I think I'll be setting my sights in that direction.

Life has a lot of golden opportunities. All it takes is networking with the right people.

To the guy doing the hiring on base, did you really just use the word "half-breed"? Seriously? You seem real educated yourself sir.
