I'm a little off-topic here. But I do have sympathy for you because your strengths sound a lot like mine and I've been rejected to a few ESL jobs myself. I'm close to your age, I'm CELTA certified, been tutoring English for years, get along great with students and am fit and handsome.

I think one weakness can outweigh multiple strengths when it comes to getting a job. It's like dating, you strikeout more than you hit homeruns. At least in my experience Confused

Water off duck's back.
Forget about it and move on. There are plenty of opportunities around.
Personally, I don't see any problem with your application.
What you don't say is:
Your background, are you welsh?
Your GPA?

Sorry to hear about your rejection. Your problem might be that you ask too many questions about your job before you get hired. I was having the same problem before I got offered a contract. It seems that if you are inquisitive, that could be a problem, they see you as "picky" and no-one wants to hire a "picky" teacher. It's best to just be very friendly and ask questions later.

On a related note, are public school teachers overwhelmingly young (20s)? Should someone in their 30s go the hagwon route?

Due to the economic refugees flooding in from the West, it isnt a teachers market anymore.

It really is too bad for teachers who have been here for years but lack proper references are passed on for newbies fresh out of college with no work experience that possess reference letters from their professors; which are so easy to obtain when youre in college.

It seems that the new EPIK regulations benefit newbies with no experience in Korea and for those lucky enough with reference letters from previous schools where they had a good co-teacher relationship. Unfortunately, some Korean school co-teachers have given unfavorable references for their NSTs for reasons other than teaching. More often a bad reference from a co-teacher or school is due to not renewing ones contact.

Your resume looks fine, and if I were you, I'd go and apply at the local school boards and EPIK offices. I don't think that you have anything to lose by doing so. Just keep everything that is questionable or negative out of your application.

I just got a rejection email from EPIK. I'm trying to figure out why, since I'm hunting for jobs elsewhere, as well, and if I have some deal breaking flaw I'm not aware of, I should figure it out soon.

Here are my strong points:

I have over two years' experience in the public school system. I am enrolled in a (not online) 120-hour TESOL course, and expect to receive my certificate this December, before the EPIK Spring hire date. I am 30 years old and reasonably good looking. I have good references (so they tell me) from the 3 public schools I've worked at full time.

Here are my possible weaknesses/mistakes---

I left one of my 3 public schools after only 5 months. I left my contract early at the request of the city education office---

Unfortunately, the reason(s) why are not taken into account by the 'K-eauracy'. They are only looking at the fact you did not complete a previous, public contract. Your application is automatically rejected. Crying or Very sad

I think its about supply and demand. 3 years ago, I sent out 4 cv's and I had 4 job offers at the end of the week.
2 years ago I applied to EPIC and told them if I didn't get the city I wanted, then I would walk out on them. I had no problems there.
My feeling now are it is still possible to find a job but its going to require a bit more work.

Anyway good luck Peter Dragon

lol,

I was denied by epik when I applied. A little about myself, certified teacher in three states (Texas, Colorado, and Arizona.) 11 years experience. Maybe you did what I did and ask too many questions, also probably had tattoos visible. I was applying because I thought it would be fun overseas for a year or two, but evidently the Global Economic Storm has made it so it would not benefit me at all. I read this board every day on my off periods and get a kick out of it. Evidently I did not fit the requirements of working in a PS over in Korea. I just want to know how else I can figure out all the benefits of kimchi if I am not there. waaaaaaaaaaaa. lol
