|
|
I was offered to do 4 extra classes at this public school I started at. They pay 20,000 won each class in overtime. They are four individual classes, so that means 4 separate developed classes along with lesson plans.
I'd say it'll be about 1 hour to prepare each class and it takes me about 30 minutes to prepare a lesson plan. Add the class time, which is 1 hour. So that's 2 hours and 30 minutes for 20,000 won.
Worth it?
I also said I would do it, but I'm starting to have second thoughts. How upset would the public school be if I said the day before starting the classes that I no longer wished to do them? |

cut down on your lesson prep/plan writing time. it shouldn't take you one hour and 30 minutes to prepare for a one hour class. |

Then it would be okay because you'd be working on Korean time. Day before, minute before, seconds before -- all okay. |

Prepare 1 lesson that can be altered easily for each class. |

Respectfully decline, saying that you need the time to study up on the Korean language and culture. Carry a resource book around for a week or two to reinforce your dedication. 20K an hour? Yikes. |

Definitely not worth it, but you agreed - so do it. Next semester when they ask again, respectfully decline and let them know why. |

I love my afterschool class. 11 kids, pretty chill. No cirriculum, so last week we did Halloween and Halloween movies, this week we're doing classic stories. Yeah, it's 5 more lesson plans and 5 times the prep and work, but it's an extra 400,000 a month and I really love the small size and the freedom, so. Take it if you want the challenge |

for me it's a no brainer (though I do get paid much more than 20k), as it's within the school hours and it beats sitting around doing nothing and being bored in the afternoon.
1 hour is a lot of prep time though (especially if your class is 40 mins?). Luckily in my case I already have a book so only spend about 15-20 mins prepping. |

you'll get faster at planning lessons after a while, but even so, at 20,000W an hour, it's not a good deal. unless you have an amazing group of advanced kids that you can do a lot of things with or it's a conversation class, i don't think it's worth it at that rate. |

bunch of whiners in here as usual
it's nearly twice what you make in a normal working hour
if you don't want to do it that's fine but don't say it's because the wage isn't fair |

i don't think many people said it was unfair, just that the wage didn't end up being worth the amount of time invested.
it takes me about 30-45 minutes to plan and make materials for one class, that's basically 2 classes of time spent. i don't know about you, but even at my job back home i made more than $10 an hour. |

...but you're already at work with a lot of these overtime classes. you're getting paid twice.
i'd LOVE to take over the after school classes from our after school teacher. |

Get a book (Side by Side, Top Notch etc.) and you will drastically reduce your lesson planning. |

Using the lower end of the PS teacher salary scale to illustrate how wrong Clockout is:
2 000 000 per month / 88 teaching hours per month = 22 728 won per teaching hour.
The wage isn't fair because its almost 3000/teaching hour less than the regular rate. Overtime should be MORE (1.5x more, actually) than your regular teaching hour rate, not LESS. |
