I think anyone who has been here over 2 years should be making about
a dollar a minute. If your not, why not? Are you complacent to be at
the bottom of the food chain? Do you enjoy making shady Korean
hagwon owners money? Are you making more than a buck a minute?
Are you scared of the terrible immi bogeyman? Do you have no idea
how to make that much? Are you here only to finance a bit of a post-
teaching trip and don't care?

$1 per minute? That's roughly 70,000 won per hour? I don't make that much, but I also like my job and decided that money was not the most important factor. I could have gotten close to that, but it would have been in an environment I would have hated from the word go. My happiness is not for sale.

and your income is not limited by that pay-packet etc.

People who like to brag about being in the top 10% or whatever of teachers here but really all this infighting is less about who is making it big but rather who is slightly less poor than the others. Its kind of like watching morbidly obese people footrace. There are clear winners but its altogether unimpressive.

It breaks down like this:

First few years here you can save a decent amount of money and experience some international flavor. You won't make enough to have the finer things in life but if you can accept that you can have a good time. You can still go back to your home country for a career at this point if money is what drives you. It is shortsighted and impractical to compare your salary and benefits to those who have made a career of it. You don't deserve it and you will in all likelihood not get it.

5+years: You have enough experience and contacts to milk the job for all its worth and the time to secure the visas/jobs you need to be where you want to be professionally. This means you make significantly more than the newbies. Of course this comes at the price. Teaching is now your career. It is not comparable to people coming for 1-2 years and leaving. It is more of a comparison to a corporate or skilled position in the west. Teaching is a respectable career anywhere and in especially in Korea you can live relatively well. Sadly as is the case with other jobs like carpentry, plumbing, or programming (except in rare circumstances) you are limited in the hours you can work and will never be rich. Being a teacher is very stable with benefits, but unfortunately you can probably never have the best car in the figurative parking lot.


TLDR People staying long term and short term are not comparable because their goals and needs are completely different. These kind of threads are stupid.
