neighboring countries?

I desperately want to get off this cold, frigid rock called Korea and teach somewhere else. My preference would be Taiwan, but the pay is lower there and you don't get the benefits that you get here in Korea, for example airfare, apartment, etc. Also, the maket there seems to be extremely flooded at the moment, which doesn't really make sense to me because of the lower pay and benefits compared to Korea.

Japan would be cool too, but the start up costs combined with the cost of living once you get a job look terrible. Again, it looks like there's a flooded market there as well.

So, why does Korea have so many more job openings than these two countries? Korea offers more pay (usually) and the benefits can't be beat. Is it just because no one wants to come to Korea, or is their zeal for learning English more here than in Taiwan or Japan?

Any ideas?

Korea is simply the best in the ESL industry hand down. Taiwan is garbage pay while Japan is a rip-off for almost everything. Not worth it.
Koreans know more than the others of the value and extreme importance of ESL education so they are willing to go the extra steps to allure more people here.

I have spent time in Taiwan, and actually the straight up pay is similar to Korea. As a new teacher there you will make around $2000 American a month, posibly more if you get a decent job. Of course rent isn't included in that though, but rent was pretty damn cheap there (even in Taipei). The thing about Taiwan is that you have initial set-up costs that you don't have in Korea since the school takes care of you, but in Taiwan you can start pulling away from the pay in Korea in the second year from what I saw. You can work privates and a second job for the most part without fear of prosecution. I know a couple guys there who work a ton and are bringing in $4000 American a month.

I loved Taiwan. If you have the money then I would recommend it. Only go to Taipei though (try Da'an area). It is true that Taiwan is overly saturated because of fewer jobs and less teachers leaving due to the global economy. SK has twice the population so there will be more jobs than in comparison to Taiwan. Other reasons I'm not sure. I don't know about Japan.

I will say that most people I met there really liked it, and you didn't see people complaining about the place like you see people constantly complaining about Korea. The people there were generally nice, and it was easy to mingle and make friends with Taiwanese people.
