Actually it's not just Koreans... most of the Asian-Americans I know have an aversion to using the dishwasher as well.

I asked my boyfriend about it and the best he could come up with was "It's the culture" (standard response when he doesn't have a good answer).

Some of my friends have told me that they think it's "unclean" (which seems just slightly more reasonable than believing in fan death).

Thoughts?

When I was viewing this place the korean family had a counter top dishwasher. Why do people on this board make stupid generalizations?

Why are you so lazy that you think a dishwasher NEEDS to be used? I haven't had a dishwasher for over 6 years here and I can't imagine needing one. I wash all of my dishes by hand with no problems.

Unless they imported it, they're sold here which would indicate a market for it, which would mean Koreans use them.

Maybe the Koreans he knows don't use them. But someone is buying enough of them to justify selling them here.

Dishwashers are built into many of the apartments here (including ours). As mentioned, there are many table-top models, too.

Koreans use them.

i wish i knew.
i have one in my apt, but it's broken. when i asked about getting it fixed i was told no b/c no korean who has the apt after me will use it... then what was the point of installing it?

When i was young my father always told me he didn't need to buy a dishwasher because he already had kids.

When I was growing up we had an old one. Not sure where my parents got it, but you had to keep it immaculately clean or else the dishes would end up coming out with stuff on them. It was more work cleaning the dishwasher than doing the dishes. I think the new ones have all kinds of bells and whistles to make sure stuff doesn't stay floating around to keep it clean.
