It looks to me that you can get a job; you're just being picky. There's nothing wrong with being picky, but according to common sense, you can't expect to get snatched up right away when you have so many demands. I mean, is 1.9 such a low salaray for someone with only one year experience? I'm not saying you couldn't get more (you probably could), but I wouldn't call that unacceptably low for you.
Again, if you insist on having 2.0 to make it worth your while, then you should hold out for it if that's what you really need, but by doing so, you have to accept that it may take some time to find it. I think what you need to do is consider how desparate you are to find a job right away and factor that into your decision-making process next time you get a job offer. |

I made that much with no experience of any kind almost three years ago. |

| I would take 1.9 if the location and job was right. The reason I turned it down was they just would not tell me how many classes a day I would teach, and alleged they had 2 other foreign teachers, but could not supply me their e-mails. |

I'll tell you some things that made me NOT email people back when I was head hunting for my school:
Guys who ask about the dress code and say they don't wanna wear a tie. That says something right there.
People who say, well I am worth XXX amount of money...offer me this and I'll consider applying to your school. - Bascially this attitude is the person thinks they are God's gift to ESL or that cause they have a year or two they are worth more money than I make.
People who try to play job against job. I know my school is better than 90% of the jobs out there. If someone doesn't want to be serious, I'll let a serious candidate take their place.
I am not sure if you have done any of the following. Single housing and no kindy aren't really big demands IMO. If you are flexible on your schedule and pay/vacation it shouldn't be too hard to find a job.
If Pusan is where you want to be, how about go down there and hit the pavement? |
Remind me not to apply to this school. |

hi ppl
Thanks for all the opinions and input abuot this topic. I am seriously considering coming to Korea in September 2004.
Now I want to ask:
Realistically, when should i start applying? I started to apply around now and im told its wayyyyy too early. (and/or they know i am not white so its their excuse to turn me away)
I understand it is b/c they dont know their numbers
but from the teacher point of view, i feel there needs time to prepare for a year abroad and moving and just life!!! I was hoping to find a contract at least by the mid summer so that I know what will happen in Sept (as a graduate student as well)
And for someone with 4 years of local experience + TESOL and in M.ed, can i realistically expect at least 2.0Won?
I am working with FootPrints Recruiting now and will sign up a few more.
What does anyone know about YBM ECC? I know this is a big organization...however, I worked for ELS Toronto/Vancouver and stirred a lot of $hit and crap b/c of the abuse they put on local teachers.
Thanks so much..any advices and response is welcome. email: [email protected] |

That is Rule #1 in Korea. Absolutely everything happens at the very last moment possible. There is absolutely no such thing whatsoever as pre-planning.
Whenever you are ready to come over here.. just let the recruiters know. Whoever needs a teacher immediately will take you. Fortunately there actually are so many jobs available that it does work out. But something you definetely can't plan months in advance.
Absolutely everything works with this same concept in mind. I'm actually finished with my contract in 2 weeks and 2 days. They refuse to buy me my return ticket home until it gets closer to that date. The last person who finished his contract got his the day before he left. This is actually frustratingly normal in Korea.
Coming to Korea works exactly the same way. They'll beg and entice anyone and everyone to come here right now this very moment should have been here yesterday already kind of mentality. But no concept whatsoever of we're going to need a new teacher six weeks from now to replace the one who is finishing, so lets look now. Just doesn't happen. |

Just curious, if you were to apply for a job at Walmart, would you request they give you the email addresses of two current workers? |

I make 200,000 less a month than in my job last year.
But I now work 10 to 4, and get 3 months vacation a year, paid.
Was working 3pm to 9pm or 4 to 10 last year. This is better, because I can have a social life.
It's not all about pay per month, although we all like more money, eh? |
