http://aidwatchers.com/2010/04/how-early-20th-century-african-artists-did-mockingly-stereotypical-images-of-whites/

I found this blog post really hilarious. It is about African villagers take on white people. For instance, white men drink a lot and wear hats. Keeping dogs as pets is also cause of much mirth.

What are some more stereotypes that other cultures have about white people?

I never "got" that "stuff white people like" crap. A lot of it is universal stuff (Conan O'Brien? hell, I hate the guy, but people across the country seem to like him). I guess the next time I see an Asian guy who says he likes Conan O'brien I can accuse him of trying to be white.

Some of them are way off but others I found to be dead on for me. The one about New Balance shoes hit real close to home. I had 6 or 7 white people over to my apartment for tacos one night and we were reading that. It mentions parties where you will find nothing but New Balance shoes piled up at the front door. Sure enough, 6 out of 7 of us had New Balances. So, when he is right, he is right.

Doesn't really sound white. Sounds like someone who comes from a wealthy family and can afford to quit working for a year.

If you read the whole post, it says that some make their year easier by teaching ESL.

So you agree with Korean hagwon owners: teaching ESL IS for white people.

Except many of us have done it for more than one year. And teaching ESL isn't exactly "taking a year off" in a lot of cases. It can be just as hard/stressful as some white-collar, "white man" job that apparently minorities covet (judging from the final sentences of that post).

That's kind of my point though. The site is inflammatory and I am surprised it is not flamed more. I think the runners of that site are basically thekindofpretentiousminoritiesidontlike.com

The site was created by a white Canadian making fun of other liberal, middle/upper class white people from N. America. Although his Asian-Canadian friend gave him some inspiration, he's also the sole author of the book.

Buuut...don't let that keep you from disliking pretentious minorities.

That isn't the voice he writes in. I mean, if you actually read it. And not just say "hur hur, white people like funny tattoos"

"Thankfully, there is an enormous opportunity for personal gain. You see, whenever a white person takes a year off it opens up a valuable apartment, job opportunity or admissions slot. Consider it to be the most pretentious form of affirmative action."

Is that new opportunity for him - affirmative action for the hip, self denigrating white dude with an Asian Canadian friend? Or for the inflammatory character he has created?

It's good that it's not flamed more. It's casually poking fun at a particular culture, that's nothing to be upset about. Our society needs to be more tolerant of this kind of behavior being directed at groups other than whites, not less tolerant of it being directed at whites.

What do you find particularly inflammatory about it?

Because A) None of it describes me or anyone I know. I'm white. B) Plenty of what it's talking about would also apply to upper middle class liberal non-whites and C) Exactly what you said. What would the reaction be if I started a site playfully "poking fun" at a different culture other than white North Americans? Double standards.

You missed what Fox was getting at. Harmlessly poking fun at a particular group should not be considered racist or discriminatory, or what ever. We should have equal opportunity discrimination. We do live in a society with the right to freedom of speech, after all.

EDIT: Just to add, the term "white people" is so broad as to be completely ridiculous. I think many non-white people consider themselves to be "white" even if their skin isn't pale and pasty. And that website describes a lot of the things about being a middle class person which I consciously rebel against. Except for the teaching ESL part.

No, I clearly got what he said. And you're right. But that isn't the reality. Again, double standard.
