Incheon International Airport Corporation shafted Korean air travelers when they rejected Air Asia's bid and gave the landing rights they controlled to KAL. The discount airline that KAL created, Jin Air, flies to all of two destinations and their fares offer little discount off of KAL fares. Also, their English website won't accept Korean bank cards.
Why do Koreans settle for this crap? |

They don't care the English website don't accept Korean cards, because English is not necessary for domestic business to transact and other international dealings catering to Koreans. They are proudly happy to work more and pay extra in support of their country including the 2 airlines and all of it's supporters, producers, and suppliers. The Koreans really have a very different outlook on life than we Westerners do. A proud ethic of getting up early every day to work hard and pay it all out in support of their country increasing it's wealth. For most, there is no me me me, what about me and my money, I deserve cheaper bargain deals. The higher prices and limited quantities of product and service is an inconvenience to us, but the Koreans don't see it that way. To them, now is the time every thing has ever been most plentiful and accessible to them. While that's true, it is slim selection and services from our perspective. |

My two main points were: Jin Air flies to only two destinations and its fares are only slightly less than KAL. Air Asia, in contrast, flies to many destinations and steeply discounts its fares. The credit card issue is an additional nuisance that only affects expats with Korean bank cards. |

. . . of which we're, what, 2% of the entire homogenous korean population? not to be blunt, but who gives a crap?
as to your original question, koreans put up with it because they don't really know any better.

I think you've missed the fact that most Koreans are not well-traveled outside of tightly regulated packages, are not proficient in foreign languages, and are not aware of a lot of the price discrepancies they face. Those who are aware of these issues are far from pleased. Your post reads like it could have been lifted from Arirang. |

the o.p. has a valid point.
flying out of seoul is a complete pain in the ass, especially for someone who:
a) doesnt care to travel with 35 age 40+ koreans...
b) wants to arrive or depart on a red eye...
theres a complete absence of discount air options (such as air asia) and it s a complete duopoly amongst korean and asiana... |

Good post. Solid explanation of why Koreans are demanding this stuff(yet). Doesn't mean we shouldn't complain about it though. |

If that's the case, then why are Cebu Pacific's flights to Cebu in the Philippines jam packed with Koreans? They fly Cebu Pacific because like everybody else who isn't Bill Gates they want to save money on their air fare. |

550,000 to Manila, but a whopping 810,000 to Cebu. This was August 7th to the 15th I searched on their site as a sample Summer vacation. It's a foreign airline option, but not the bargain one would hope for. Maybe those Koreans are seeking a foreign experience to add to the adventure by going on a foreign airline? I can't see how I can save money here as it costs just as much, if not less to book elsewhere according to my searches. It's also an English speaking country so that offers very valuable experience to those trying to learn in attempt to get ahead in their careers. To me, it's only a convenience that isn't necessary as long as the locals are talented and friendly enough. |

Which airline? Those sound like Korean Air fare amounts.

Wait! Is ROK a capitalist country, or a communist country? Or a unusual hybrid of the both? |
