I'm reading through the EPIK/SMOE contract for this upcoming year and it states that you get 18 paid days of vacation. 8 must be taken during winter recess and 10 must be taken during summer recess.
Are you not allowed to take vacation outside of these times? Anyone know what the recess dates are? |

Are the ten days in summer monday to friday days, or are they counted as monday to sunday days?
Any info appreciated.
Thanks |

18 working days - 10 and 8 respectively.
21-28 if you are in GEPIK. |

your contract will either state "consecutive days" or "work days".
so take a guess. |

The recess days are when school is typically not in session, which can vary from school to school. At the high school I teach at, the winter recess was the first 5 weeks of 2010 as well as the last three weeks of February. The Summer recess will start July 16 and end on on Aug 23. Your vacation days are still subject to the approval of your school as well. You have to work around any scheduled camps that might come up. |

One can often negotiate when vacation time will be taken. I prefer to take the majority of my days in the winter, so that I can go to a warmer place. My coteacher--the one who handles my vacation requests--understands and agrees. I took ALL of my vacation time in the winter for my first contract. |

Yes, mine too. If they are lowering them, this really really really sucks. |

Yeah, EPIK contract for this year states 18. It's also used for SMOE applicants. Last year's said 21. |

Is it possible that new teachers are getting 18 and re-signing teachers are sticking with 21? At the re-signing interview they told us 21. |

Are you guys getting 21 working or consecutive days? The EPIK contract last year originally said 21 consecutive days but was changed to 18 working days afterwards.
To the OP: you are supposed to take those days during the recess, however, if there are scheduling conflicts you can take them outside of the break. For example, some POEs load up three or four weeks of camps, making it impossible to take all those days during the break. In that case you have to take vacation during regularly-scheduled classes. Schools hate this but it's up to the POE. |
