| In the 17th and 18th centuries, Scotland went from being one of the more backward and brutish European cultures to an intellectual and Enlightenment powerhouse. The redneck culture of the Deep South was inherited mostly from poor whites from Scotland and other at-the-time poor areas of the British Isles. In our time, Scotland is slowly but surely reverting to its pre-Enlightenment self. In 100 years time, Scotland and the UK in general will be totally unrecognizable. These things happen. China, on balance, is historically probably the single greatest contributor to civilized human life and yet spent most of the 20th century as a third world country. |

I'll take your China and raise you the middle east. Specifically, the area around what was Mesopotamia. Look how that's turned out over the last 100 years+.
To the poster above: on balance, having lived in Scotland and England, I'd say that the diet in either country seems to be little different: too much fat, too much sugar, etc., etc. |

Scotland is turning back into it's pre-enlightenment self? As far as I was aware, the Scottish Enlightenment was mainly addressed from a small intellectual elite to a European audience, not a Scottish audience. Ordinary life was no intellectual feast any more then than it is now, except for mere modern trifles like universal education, nigh-on universal literacy/numeracy etc.
Or are you referring more to how Scots invented half of the industrial revolution? (not actually part of the period in Scots history known as the Scottish Enlightenment).
