So, my two year old MSI Wind has been blue screening a lot lately. This evening I took it to the local repair shop.

All I wanted to do was swap out the HDD, so he cracked it open and had a look inside. He pulled out the RAM and asked "upgrade?", my initial reaction was no, because I added an extra stick of RAM when I bought it off gmarket. But he insisted. When I took a look at the RAM chip, it only said 1 GB! I've had it for two years and was convinced it had 2GB of RAM. The bios and Control Panel both said 2GB.

Is it even possible to fake how much RAM is in it?

Oh yea. I ended up getting a 500GB HDD, 2GB of RAM and W7 Ultimate for 200,000w.

The bios is more reliable than the sticker when it comes to capacity. Did you get the blue screen fixed? If not I know of a few utilities that can help locate the problem.

Just getting a fresh install. I'm fairly sure the bios said 2gb. Is it possible to fake the ram value in the bios?

you said you added an extra stick of RAM to get 2GB of RAM, so that would be two 1GB RAM sticks right? So you looked at one RAM stick and it said 1GB? Sounds normal to me, unless there was only one RAM stick in there after the upgrade.

Was it single sided or double sided RAM?

If its double sided, it could've said 1GB on one side, and then 1GB on the other side.

1+1=2.

Well, it's a netbook so only has one slot. I should've said I got the ram upgraded to 2gb when I bought it. Well, I thought I did.

That doesn't seem right. There was only one sticker, and it was A symmetrical. So I don't think so. The back side had 4 little modules. Whatever that means.

Double-sided RAM? It's unlikely that a PC2-5300 chip would be "double sided" in the context you're using.

Since 1GB comes standard (in all the netbooks I've ever seen, and that's a lot!) I would assume they just didn't upgrade it like you wanted. Sad That is an amazing price for HDD, 2GB RAM, and Win7. Holy [mod edit]. Shocked

Some netbooks have 1GB ram embedded on the motherboard AND a slot for another stick. Very Happy (Most netbooks will only recognize 2GB; could be you now have three but your notebook can't see it)

Most likely pirated W7 Ultimate.=Cost Free
2GB Notebook Ram=50,000
500 GB HDD=62,000
(So depending on whether the "local repair tech" gave you your 1GB stick back to you; me thinks yeah ya got screwed. Ram not really upgraded) Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Sorry, missed the part where it was NOTEBOOK Ram.

A lot of notebook computers have 2 separate RAM locations. My Thinkpad had a RAM slot under the keyboard, and another on the bottom of the Notebook.


Most likely, your notebook was the same.
