Sugar gliders do not exist in Korea.
There are only 3 "squirrel-types' found in korea.
The red squirrel, the flying squirrel, and the siberian chipmunk.
The OP said they were a gliding animal.
Only "gliding animal" (excluding bats) in Korea (and indeed the whole of Eurasia)..is the flying squirrel.
They live in the NE of the country anround the taebek mountains, and have been much reduced in numbers by pesticides which have eliminated the food they eat.
In Korea its common for people to go find and pick up creatures they find in the wild then either show them off or try to hawk them on the streets out of a sack. usually the poor creature dies because people don't know how to look after them. Nor should they be: they should have left them where they were, in their natural habitat. |

They are marsupials that live in Australia and new guinea.

Your article states that sugar gliders are kept as pets in North america.

I was referring to the fact that you and another poster are arguing over a man the OP saw having an endangered animal when in fact, neither of you knows what animal the OP actually saw. It seems from the conversation here that it could indeed have been a sugar glider, which is most decidedly not an endangered species native to Korea and probably should not be released into the wild. Though I do appreciate the informative zoology lesson, you quite obviously missed my point. Though I do agree that wild animals should be kept in the wild, jumping to conclusions and engaging in a heated argument over a situation that might or might not exist is just silly. |

That comment wasn't directed at you, if that is what you think. I've been working under the assumption that it was a sugar glider for some time now. The OP identified it and I showed some blog posts of them in Korea. It seems that they are almost certainly kept as pets in Korea.
Now we have that cleared up, Nautilus owes every one a big apology. |

Actually, funnily enough, I disagree....I act like a jerk ALL THE TIME on here. I often provide helpful information or engage in pseudo-intelligent debates or sell books and video games, but I am definitely guilty of being a jerk quite often, especially as I become more fed up with living in Korea and my angst grows.
Just today I commented on someone's Buy/Sell/Trade post that I have no sympathy when people who engage in such financial wizardry end up with no real savings as they live in an endless quest to one up the Jones's. (He was selling a $500 phone that he just bought in January because he upgraded and bought another $500 phone....the new phone was probably more than that really.) It was none of my business whatsoever...he's just trying to sell his phone, and not ask my approval of his retarded spending habits.
Acting like a jerk is part of what makes this place fun....in real life I am not a jerk and I don't engage in ridiculous, pedantic arguments about things I could give a flyin' fart about....but here....man, I'll argue until I'm blue in the face about which kind of squirrel is which. I was not actually in this pedantic argument, but I very well could have been.
When someone in the real world says something that I deem to be unintelligent I don't get all up in their grill and scream "ARE YOU KIDDING ME? That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard! Let me count the reasons why you're an imbecile!"
I often want to......but I don't. This is not how a civilized person behaves.
But here? It's no holds barred. Be a jerk, take out the rage you feel towards your incompetent co-workers on some ignorant noob who has been in Korea for 3 months and thinks they know everything there is to know about this place.
Know a waygook that you'd like to punch in the face as he blabbers on about how often he's eaten dog? Well....civilized people don't punch other people in the face, not even when they deserve it....so, you come on here and argue with PatrickGHBusan until it makes you feel better.
But Senior (if you're still reading, as I know you find my responses to be a tad bit verbose), I will fully admit that in real life I do tend to ramble off extensive diatribes on virtually an hourly basis. |

Stop making a fool of yourself. Blatantly mis-quoting me isn't going to save you. I didn't assume anything. I said "Maybe it was a common old squirrel or chip munk." As in, we don't actually know what it was.
However, now we do know. We know it was a sugar glider. A decidedly unendangered species which is kept as pets in many countries, one of which, it seems, is Korea. |
