I'm trying to find a language translation program, primarily to translate between French and English but other languages would help.

All the ones I've found online have just been portals to Google's language tools. That's great when I'm connected but I spend time in France in a cottage iwth no net access.

Any suggestions?

It's not free, but Babylon is fairly good, handles a ton of different languages adn also does currency and measurement conversions. http://www.babylon.com/

Has this generation really forgotten about the wonders of a good dictionary?

It seems too much effort to find each word in a dictionary when paragraphs of text can be instantly translated by the computer. I'll have a look at Babylon, cheers.

I'm honestly not trying to rain on your parade, but google translate is the best translation service on the net and I've had many (not just one) korean tell me it is absolute garbage. In fact I've seen a lot of them laugh and shake their heads when people try to use it because it butchers the meanings and makes things incomprehensible so often.

Korean, as a language, is so much different in execution and result than English that it is really almost impossible to machine-translate it. I've spent a large amount of time trying to think of how to make it better just for kicks and I'm always left at a loss.

The absolute best translator is a outside person who can speak both languages fluently and the second would ironically be the person needing translating with a little knowledge of the language paired with something like a good dictionary or google/babelfish translate.
