took 1 mg ativan about an hour prior to taking the test (thought there was to be a huge speech in front of hundreds of people)
wondering if this is (a)something they check for and (b) if this was too much/too soon before taking the health/drug test? |

Why did you think there was going to be a huge speech in front of hundreds of people for a drug test? |

it was the day of introducing the new people at the school and was under the impression there would be a large audience |

Yeah, sounds like you're screwed. Good luck, though who knows what may happen.
For future reference, even if it is a few hundred people, all you do is go "Hi, I'm XX from (country), let's have a good year! Fighting!" and that's it. Do you really need a benzodiazepine for that?
Also, don't take any drugs in Korea unless they're prescribed, and even at that, try and tough it out without them. |

As suggested above, your "huge speech" would have amounted to a few words that no one paid much attention to anyway. Korea is not soft on anxiety pills. Good luck.

Well then you're in better shape than most, but again, Korea isn't soft on anti-anxiety pills. Your chances are 50-50 I'd say. Let us know what happens. |

Well, it depends whether the test for drugs is a standard '5-panel' or whether it is more than that.
If it is the standard '5-panel' which looks for:
Cannabinoids (marijuana, THC)
Cocaine (cocaine, crack)
Amphetamines (amphetamines, dextroamphetamine, methamphetamine)
Opiates (heroin, codeine, morphine)
Phencyclidine (PCP)
Then you would be fine (as far as I know).
If not, you may come up with a positive but in all likelyhood you would need to test again in a few days in which case you would be clear. |

At my school everyone testing during the same few days. However one person failed a test. I heard it was the drug one. They asked her to take it again this week. No big dramas (yet). |

tell your boss you'd like to delay taking the test for a little while (legally, you have 90 days). wink and nod if you must, they know the deal if they've ever had foreign teachers before. getting a bit of a shaming at work is better than being deported, and your school doesn't want you going home any more than you do. |

1) Contrary to popular belief (apparently), humans have bladders. The pee that comes immediately from your body comes from there. The bladder is a storage tank. It is filled by your kidneys.
The kidneys are magic. As all the nutrients are extracted and the outgoing trash taken out, bingo-bango, there's pee in your kidneys. It's headed for the bladder.
Your kidneys don't produce urine nearly fast enough to have *anything* show up an hour after ingestion. I mean think about it seriously.
2) I've been taking xanax at high dose quite regularly for the past seven years. Two of those years were in Korea. I passed my drug screen and never had a problem getting anxiety drugs in Korea.
3) We've anecdotally established they don't test for benzos on the pre-employment physical. |

Most hospitals in Korea still use TBPE for the drug screen. It's reasonably accurate and cheap, plus if you blow that one, they automatically give you a panel test to see which one you blew.
OP, I don't know why these other people are trying to get you fired. Perhaps they're each other's socks? I've never seen such bad advice in the same place since Bush invaded Iraq. *Don't* wink and not to your boss. Don't get on the next plane. Don't do squat. You're fine. |
