Im just curious. If you are leaving America and going to Korea to teach, are Koreans friendly? Are there places where foreigners can meet and hang out?

Do recruiters have get togethers where you can hang out and meet other teachers like you?

I know these questions might sound silly, but I really dont know. lol

Friends are HIGHLY overrated. Don't worry about it. Learn to enjoy your own company.

Public school districts usually have get-togethers, at least in Gangwon-do. Hagwons don't usually belong to any specific networks that can help you meet people, but there are lots of groups and events and activities that you can meet friends through.

I recommend searching for your town or province on facebook, and go from there.

Koreans are very friendly, but super weird, especially outside of the big cities, plus most of them won't speak English well enough to be a proper friend....if you're going to a smaller town then most likely 95% of your friends will be other foreigners.

In general it isn't too hard to make friends as the foreigners tend to stick together.

they're friends up until the point you ask them to go out . well i guess they're friends when EVERYONE goes out after work, but try to call them on the weekends and ask them to do something, nah it aint happening. They're too afraid of having to speak in English the whole time.

Are you talking about co-workers or Koreans in general? The former may be true, but plenty of my Korean friends are always down for hanging out on the weekend, going on trips, etc etc.

Everyone's mileage will vary. Depends largely on how socially adept you are, & luck.

I think what an earlier poster said is right, learn to like your own company, and you'll probably want to hang around other non koreans anyway.

Once you get to know the Korean mind, you'll be quite put off by their presence. Very Happy They really are kind of weird. The hermit kingdom indeed. At least find a korean that has a passport and has travelled, they tend to be more normal.

"You're"

And that's a couple of pretty big generalizations, especially for a foreigner to make. Just sayin'.

Hmm, no, I prefer to judge everyone individually. You never know when someone who looks like an idiot will turn out to be really nice and cool.
