Bwahaha! You think a real forensics lab operates anything like an episode of CSI?

Every time I watch CSI and they are investigating a crime scene using only their flashlights, I feel like yelling at them to turn on the freakin' lights for once!

There was an episode of Monk once that parodied the ridiculousness of CSI type shows. Not that Monk is particularly intelligent or uncontrived.

Speaking of MASH, I downloaded the entire series. I've done that with all the old shows I like. Green Acres, Beverly Hillbillies, All in the Family, The complete Star Trek Series, etc... I usually watch them for an hour or so before bed. Better than watching the garbage that passes for programming on TV today.

Shows like CSI and that fishing boat show on Discovery are like watching the same episode over and over!

you're comparing simple slapstick shows like MASH to the depth of shows like LOST, House, Dexter and Battlestar Galactica?

are you going to ask me to get off of your lawn too?

So you're telling us all you're old huh? Got it

sure...i'm older than some, & younger than others

the simple point i was making (in agreement w/ the OP) is that tv was far more intelligent a few years back

i don't watch tv at all these days, thank the gods

If you don't watch tv at all, there is no way to compare current programs to older programs.

Look at what TV has degenerated into today. Even popular shows like Friends was mostly about sex, stabbing/attacking someone and getting ahead any way you could. The comedies from decades ago were funnier and lighthearted. Sure, the Beverly Hillbillies was about some hicks in CA, but no one got hurt and it was genuinely funny. Ever see the episode where Granny hunts a kangaroo thinking it was a giant jackrabbit?!?

Keeping up with the Kardashians.

Pretty sure it requires a room-temperature-or-lower IQ to appreciate that show.

what's more scary is that now these girls and Snookie are considered the leading the celebrities of Hollywood. they are getting paid serious money to just turn up and events and be seen. paparazzi stalk them like they are Liz taylor and Richard Burton in the past...

America you have spoken! god help you!

The term "boob tube" was coined in the 60s.

Yes, it's getting dumber. I heard a valid comment that the sitcoms of the 70's & 80's dealt with serious issues like racism and discrimination against women.

But recent sitcoms like 2 1/2 Men and Friends don't get into anything deep. I'd even say that Seinfeld deals with fluff compared with old sitcoms like All In The Family, Family Ties and Different Strokes.

That's not dumber, that's just less preachy and that's a good thing. I don't watch sitcoms to see what some comedy script-writers have to say about serious social issues.

It's the whole Pop culture thing....

The majority of both current television and music offerings is in sinc with the today's here and now culture

Mainstream music is just as forgetable as mainstream television.

Anyone that says it isn't so, is into popculture. I'm not knocking you or your culture but don't try and pretend it's more intelligent, educational or enlightening. It's just more catchy, computer enhanced and in your face

In my humble opinion

Exactly. Do you think the 19th century masses were reading Dostoevsky and Wilde? No. Mainstream readers went for trite pulp fiction of the dime novel: adventure and romance by a long list of unknowns.

Even the golden age of jazz was a time when radio was dominated by big band and swing (Glenn Miller, ugh), not by the great works of Monk, bebop or Miles. Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit", chosen by Time Magazine in 1999 as the song of the century, only reached #16 on the pop charts in 1939.

Sure, a Charles Dickens or Louis Armstrong can transcend the gulf between original worthy music and mainstream crap, but that doesn't refute the fact that a gulf exists.
