I have never heard of anyone living on Geoje. I'm going there this weekend to do some hiking.

I'll let you know if I see anything that even remotely resembles a night life.

I live here as do about 200,000 others.

There are loads of things to do and see.

Lots of restaurants, thai, indian, russian, turkish, american.

We have the usual starbucks, mcdonalds, kfc, vips, pizza hut invasion.

The nightlife is what you make of it. The esl teachers on the island are a great bunch, there's always things to do, nights out, gatherings and what have you.
There are loads of Bars, okpo has a hell of a lot of bars aimed at foreigners such as british and irish bars. some of them aren't all that good and the area can be quite seedy in places. Gohyeon has a lot of bars too, a couple of german bars, 3-4 wa bars, and a few others too....plus the usual selection of korean bars.

Most shops you could need are here, bean pole, foot locker, nike, adidas, asics, skin food, body shop, homeplus, cgv etc etc.

There's also going to be a new department store opening, according to the poster they had up a few months ago it was going to have a bennigans and som other restaurants (but apparently these shops were just for show for the picture)

A group of us play soccer on saturdays for 2-3 hours. We just play against whoever challenges us on the day. We are undefeated against aduclt teams so far but we did suffer a golden goal defeat to some middle school students Sad we beat them in a rematch the following week though Smile

The area has the highest number of foreigners per capita in the country so we have a good variety of western food available either through the various foreigner stores or the larger selection of western goods available in our homeplus.

Anything specific you need to know, then just ask.

I also advised you about this on another forum I think Smile

Thanks a million!

Although the thought of Bennigans turns me green! Mr. Green

I was just a bit worried about going somewhere so small, you hear stories about isolation, just wanted to double chek it wouldn't be the case...

Starting work in Gohyeon in January, is there anything notable that you cant get on Geoje that I should be stock up on at home?

Have you signed the contract? where will you be working?

brown sauce and tea bags.

Although you can get tea bags, they violate your wallet for about 40 of them.

I brought over lots of spices to cook with. You can get various indian spices for butter chicken, tika masala and loads others too.

I would still bring some with me though.

and you can get the ferry onto the mainland and be in bigger cities like Busan and Changwon (where you can get a train to seoul) quite easliy and cheaply.
Its also a great place to ride if you have a scooter/bike.

you can get to seoul from geoje in under 4 hours by bus. Changwon in an hour/ hour and a half by bus / car.

You don't need to take a ferry to get to the mainland, the bridge connecting geoje to the road leading into Tongyeong is only about 200 metres long. There are also two bridges right next to one another connecting geoje to the mainland.

The only time I take a ferry from Geoje to anywhere is to go to Busan as it takes less than half the time the bus takes, however, with the new bridge opening shortly bringing us right to Busan with no towns along the way, I would think this will be my choice of travel in the future.

Translation: This place is probably the farthest point away from civilization possible. There is almost nobody else here. So you don't get to choose your friends. You are forced to socialize with a clique of people who enjoy being in the middle of nowhere.

PS: Hajeon Guk? (Soup for breakfast? Get real.)

Obvously never been to geoje then, have you FDNY. Or of you have, you were one of those that didnt socilise.

O.P if its booming nightlife you want every night of the week then no, geoje isn't for you. There is a good night scene between the main areas of the island. There are alot (i mean alot) of foreigners on the island, as it has two large shipyards. Both teachers and engineers socialise with eachother so there always mixture of people around.

Personally I'd take a quieter nightlife for beaches every morning of the summer, hiking or general exploring in the winter. Life here is very easy, alot of the locals speak good english, there are lots if restaurants, foreign markets, supermarkets etc. The island isn't isolated at all.

P.S FDNY you stink of Cohiba. and the many other alias that guy has had on this board. If theres anyone not to be listened to its this guy.

well, that's two peoplebefore me who have let you know how valued your opinion is.

You don't get to choose your friends? There are thousands of foreigners on the island, I choose my friends based on common interests. There are quite a few people I'm friendly with but I wouldn't go as far as to say we were friends.

What's the difference between making friends here and making friends in Itaweon.....sure you are only socialising with a clique of people who enjoy the company of other white people and the sound of their own voice.

PS. It's not breakfast when you have it before you go to bed....it's a late night snack.

(You don't like Korean food or tradition but you live in Korea? get real.)
