Anyone seen the Fly to Seoul" ads on Discovery channel? There's a Korean pop boy band singing Fly to Seoul ad nauseum - lots of jiggling, prancing and singing. I can't imagine who KTO think their target audience (prospective tourists) are.

Are they trying to attract:
- young monied Koreans (do they watch the English Discovery channel anyway?).
w esterners from other countries?
- other Asian tourists?

The mind boggles. I wouldn't hail a cab on the strength of that promo.

Considering how HUGE 2PM are right now in Southeast Asia, Japan, China, Hong Kong, etc. I'd say they know exactly who their target audience are. Young, affluent singles/couples...a couple friends of mine from the Philippines recently made the trip specifically for nightlife and shopping and really, really enjoyed themselves. After the whole "Korea, Sparkling" mess I'd say this is at least a step in the right direction.

In addition, this at least has some sense of focus...modern nightlife, luxury shopping, etc.

Thanks for the info. I didn't realise that their target audience is young single/couples from other Asian countries. However, I wonder if you can base a successful long-term tourist industry on this demographic?????

Sure, they might be independent travellers (and so spend more than the dreaded tight fisted bus tour lot), but I can't see Seoul being invaded by thousands of free spending Asian singles - anytime soon.

You obviously don't spend a lot of time in Myeong-dong/Namdaemun/Dongdaemun/COEX, then.

And Insadong.

Go to these places and every other person is speaking a language other than Korean.

I guess you got me there. I haven't lived in Seoul for nearly 3 years.
So I guess the Fly to Seoul ad is targeting these guys. Thanks for the tip.

I know romanization can be ambiguous. But you wrote 선 (from 선생님) as 'sung.'

I thought it was a good commercial, but there should have been more girls and less mountains. I don't care about a bunch of gay hills. If I want to go see a mountain I'll go to Tibet, but I don't want to see mountains because mountains are boring.

Lots of Japanese. Also a fair bit of Chinese and other Asians as well.
