its called poppy day because after the wars in flanders (first world war), poppies started to grow in the fields (red poppies signifying blood spilled on the fields).
A poem was then written by John McCrae called 'in flanders field'

poppy day/rememberance day/armistice day/veterans day - (different names for the same thing) has since then become a yearly commonwealth commemoration of those who fought and died in the first and WW1 and 2 and other wars. |

| Yes, I do find it a bit offensive when someone makes the assumption that when there is a comment that is perceived as insensitive, an American must have said it. It's as if no other nationality could ever make those types of comments. |

Well, seeing as November the 11th is commemorated in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the United Kingdom - it seems strange that a Canadian would make light of the day - unless the Canadian in question is a bit of an idiot!
So it leaves the Irish and the Americans. Near to half a million Irishmen fought for Britain in too many wars to mention. So don't get offended if someone thinks the idiot concerned being disrespectful is an American - it's a natural assumption based on fact.
Again - if British posters made the same cracks about memorial day - they would be banned - end of.  |

We also observe Nov. 11. We call it Veteran's Day. Memorial Day is for all of the soldiers that died during the wars, and Veteran's Day is to honor all soldiers, living and dead. |

That's exactly my point - no one was making light of the day. The intent from the beginning was clearly to poke fun at the OP who got his dates wrong (Fri Nov 12th -13th), not Vets.
In my view, the OP's subsequent reaction (i.e. accusing people of disrespecting the memory of Veterans) was silly and over-the-top.
That's why this guy seems like he needs a rest. |

I posted because I feel it is my civic duty to remind people (cos were all away from home and may not remember about these things) that its rememberance sunday this weekend. Not to start up crap with a bunch of bored children- again.

sorry about that but i served in bosnia in the 90's when I was in my early 20's. Suffice to say that I have no sense of humour when it comes to this kind of thing - specifically people disrespecting the memory of my family and friends ie making ambiguous jokes/sarcastic comments about original post.
on the best of days, it is quite annoying/frustrating when people (specifically civies) start throwing around ignorant remarks about something they dont even take the time to comprehend let alone trying to empathise with before commenting on it.
As for thinking it was an american, sorry if that caused offence but i really could not believe someone from a commonwealth country would make a facetious comment about memorial day. knowing brits/scots/irish etc., I knew it wouldnt be one of us because unless your a professional chav, probably wouldnt say anything like that out loud.
as for telling me to chilax, sounds to me a bit like your trying to cover up for being a prat by making out that it was me that over reacted?
anyway, 9 times out of 10 it is an american that makes said comments.

I can see how, as a former soldier, you would feel so strongly about this subject.
But you should know that none of the comments here were made maliciously. I really see no reason to get so worked up.

I didnt want to get drawn into a petty, tit-for-tat debate with anyone regarding this thread but que sera... theres not one thing that boils my wet than people telling me to 'chill out'
One of the people who made a comment said they hadnt realised and appologised. I respected that a lot. When that person appologised, I was pretty certain i dropped my argument.
I do not take issue entirely with the comments themselves so much as the re-occuring instances where people make 'oafish' comments and then when someone responds or reacts, they refuse to take any responsibility for what they have said. In this case passing the buck to me for reacting to negative, commenting on my thread.
And I do not have a specific issue with Americans. I have stood next to a lot of good blokes from the states and would do so again.
Its the immature dolts that plug up threads with lowbrow, unwitty, atttention seeking, uncivil comments that one has to deal with time and time again.
That does not make me a biggot I hope, it is merely an observation.
Please feel free to correct me if you disagree, it is afterall a public forum |
