I went to Pulau Pangkor for 2-3 days. It is 3-4 hours from KL. I really enjoyed it but it was the low season (June) so there was hardly anyone there. I have a hunch it would be a lot more crowded when you'll be going to Malaysia.

It's been several years now since I was there so I can't tell you off the top of my head. I know we were near Coral Bay. I can look it up in my journal later on and might be able to give you more info that way. I think there are only 1-2 spots where budget travelers go. If you want something more upscale, I'm probably not the ideal source of info. Smile

You can fly to Langkawi. Check the price. It may be high, may not be.

If you are in Kuala Lumpur, I saw a cheap ticket from there to Krabi on Air Asia. If you insist on staying in Malaysia, I guess not a good idea. But I have heard good things about Krabi.
