Two marines are now dead.
And the pictures on the Internet, which will be in American newspapers tomorrow morning, show an island on fire after civilian homes were fired upon by NK. Those photos are going to really heat things up. |

For what it's worth -
Some of the confusion or different opinions on the attack may have come from some of the headlines. I just saw a current headline that has "populated" area etc.. I don't know about others but this immediately rang civilian to me and might to others including writers at newspapers.
I remember at the time of the Cheonan incident I thought I saw a lot of "time to kick ass" sentiments being thrown around. I feel like I'm hearing it again in a few posts (not singling anyone out or going back and counting posts).
War is tragic for all who are involved - win or lose. Immediate emotional reactions aside (I'm sure there's some of that in Korea and on the board) it's nothing anyone should be impatient about seeing. |

This could be part of it. When i watched the news tonight a good part of it focused on the civilian evacuation and the burning homes. |

| Every time the North Koreans do this the Korean won tanks. Maybe this is just one of Kin Jong Il's dodgy money making schemes. Go short the Korean won Monday, fire some shots Tuesday, cash in your mega profit making trades Wednesday. Then again the Korean government does have a weak won policy...........mmmmmmmm. Fodder for conspiracy theorists. |

| I got ahold of my friend at Casey, they're doing alot of "just in case" preparations. All in all he didn't seem too terribly worried about it which is a good thing. |

You gotta remember no civilians were killed. Two marines were killed.
If the Norks were after those civilians I think they would have got them.
In actuality they targeted the base. And got it.
Targeting bases is a legitimate military strategy. Ask any Korean 12 year old who plays Starcraft and he will tell you. Civilians near bases does not make them targets. This Island was very small at just a few miles across and was less than 20 miles from the North Korean mainland. How accurate do you think artillary is? |

Yeah, I suspect almost none of the information we have is even confirmable really. The Drudge report (for example) has an emotional headline that could be taken as a banner for WWIII. Meanwhile, armed forces Korea has not a mention of anything. We may just be entering the woods but until we know more - heading to bed for some sleep is the best strategy!!
buenas noches everyone! |

But the question still stands - if you didn't want to target civilians (a hypothetical 'you' of course), why not target a purely military one?
You are presuming they targeted the base... mind telling me how you know that? |

| Did I just say just my friend? I did just mention his unit right? So his unit is the only unit who didn't know? Like I said, word normally travels fast, and obviously it didn't since the average soldier was unaware of the incident. It's pretty sad that civilians found out about it first hours before the average soldier did. Not to mention he's stationed north of Seoul, not like he's in Daegu. |
