Pathetic.

A 100 degree desert the size of Connecticut where I can't drink beer, and Larissa Riquelme will probably have to cover up. Boy, can't wait!

Air conditioned stadiums did it for the Arabs.

Let's see how the Russians cope with the WC, could be interesting.

I was hoping the USA could host it to get into the international football culture. Would also be excellent in promoting some life and excitement into our stagnated economy. Qatar doesn't need the money, it's so rich with oil. Qatar is exotic and FIFA wants to get the Islam world involved since soccer is the international sport.

To host a world cup FIFA requires countries make special conditions and allowing the sale of alcohol is one of them. These countries know what is required of them to host these events. So for 1 month in 2022 Qatar will change into on of the most social liberal places on earth. I think it's pretty cool that Qatar gets to host a big event like the WC.

However, Russia needs to do something about their rampant violent racism towards non-whites. There will be tons of non-Christan, non-white fans wondering all around. Either social attitudes have to change, or they'll have to place police and soldiers all over the place to prevent mobs beating on some poor African fan. But 8 years is a lot of time, considering that during communist times Russian universities actively encouraged bright African students to study in Russia and all of them made it out alive. But that was over 20 years ago though.

I don't begrudge a populous country with a tradition of football, but I do take offence at them basically giving it to a bunch of oil-rich playboys who fancy having it in their back garden to stroke their egos.

I don't even know where Qatar are in the FIFA world rankings...top 100?

I think I read they were at #89. They decided that since their team couldn't make the World Cup, they would try to host it instead.

I do think it's admirable that they will dismantle some of the stadiums and donate them to Third World countries.

but despite concerns regarding the blistering heat it was Qatar who convinced the Fifa voters. "We know it would be a bold gamble and an exciting prospect but with no risk," the bid chief executive, Hassan Al-Thawadi, said. "Heat is not and will not be an issue."

A bold gamble with no risk? Laughing

So anyways, Qatar will change a bunch of their laws for the duration of the world cup, so i imagine the business with alcohol, women, the press, human rights and so on will be relaxed. but i think if a country HAS to do that for a world cup then it's basically a sign they shouldn't really be considered in the first place.

Quite so, they were one of the better teams in Europe during Soviet times.
