Then why should people take seriously your criticism of the OP? The above makes you sound closed to criticism, constructive or otherwise. How can a teacher improve if they don't take in what others have to say? |

I don't think it's lame because I didn't tell her to simply try harder. I told her specific page numbers and class notes (I type and hand out notes for every class) where she could find the answers. Like I saide earlier, in this program, students have the chance to transfer up to 12 credits to one of four American universities, including an Ivy League, towards an MA in TESOL.
So, of course, I want my students to try harder but I always point them in the right direction, and I don't think having slightly higher standards for our Korean students is a bad thing. When we have higher expectations, that are achievable and within grasp, then we usually perform better. |
I couldn't understand why superNET had such a problem with this part. Suddenly you (the OP) were the bad guy, and you should have just "given her the correct answers".
I know of a teacher that is taking a class in MA TESOL. She is a nice lady, but incredibly lazy. She had her former subordinate do homework for her (I knew this because the subordinate told me all about it). What kind of a student are you making when you just "give them the answers"? What is the point of you being called a teacher, if the student isn't really learning anything? |

I didn't have a problem with it, the student did. If the student couldn't find the right answer then tell her. For the rest of that opening paragraph, he is the bad uy because he left a student needing help and that is wrong.

You are distorting the issue, she wasn't being lazy, SHE GOT 23 OUT OF 25 CORRECT. Giving her 2 answers is not going to make her lazy but help her see where she went wrong so she doesn't do it the next time.
I really do not see how you people are teachers when you miss vital teaching moments. |

She was being lazy. She got the answers that were easy for her, but didnt want to put any effort into finding the two that were difficult for her - especially after being given a study guide, the page numbers with the answers and then crying after only 15 minutes. The teaching moment here was "stop being a baby, we dont spoon feed every bite when youre an adult."

Can you give me the answers? I'm really worried!!" I told her that most students do really well on the exam and not to worry, and I also gave her specific page numbers and notes so that she can find the answers. |

And you are wrong. All I see from your comment and severalothers, including the Op, is that there are a bunch of lazy, unhelpful, uncaring, western teachers in this land taking home money they did not earn. |

Dont forget 'drug-addled', 'sex-crazed', 'disease-ridden' and most of all - 'unqualified'. A few more posts, Seoulio, and I'm sure the Korea Times will be calling you to offer Kang Shin-Who's position of Foreign Teacher Slanderer at their paper. |

You may be right, but who hired them?
How did the OP's refusal to give a couple of answers suddenly morph into
what you described above?
Western teachers tend to uphold the standards they had to adhere to as students. Whether or not you agree with the OP's teaching methods I can't see how you would think that your ideas are better.
You've given your opion of what you would do, fine. It seems most posters disagree with you, so you start name-calling. (brilliant)
I don't know of any profs back in my university that would have given me the answers, regardless how many I got right, except "after" the exam stage. |

Pay no mind to superNET. His trolling tactic is to constantly instigate arguments (even if his position makes no sense) while always interjecting "the western way" or "stupid westerners".
What a goof. |

@ SuperNET:
If she was helpless, as you claim, she wouldn't have been able to get 23 right. She's being lazy. He gave her directions as to where to find the answers. |

| Well, I have read this thread with some amusement. Now, let me point out a fallacy made by SuperNET. He says that the West is lagging behind in education? While it is certainly true that in America there are a number of problems with educational attainment, that is mostly due to the pre-university education (possibly partly due to permissiveness such as what is advocated by SuperNET). Also, the USA is widely acknowledged to have world class universities. Further, I think that when one examines the wider meaning of term "the West", that includes many other countries besides the USA many (if not most) of which are doing quite well in the rankings related to education. |
