However no one outside of English teachers here and their families will really care...as they just can't relate to this. And especially given the global turndown, most people have other things to think of.

Honestly, how many English teachers in South Korea actually have HIV/AIDS?
One maybe? Two? I want to see some numbers, because it can't be that many. |

Why did you say "it's good" that nobody will care outside S. Korea? You're really outrageous you know it UrbanMyth.

Forget the AIDS test. Koreans should strictly enforce a reading comprehension test. That will eliminate a good 70% of Dave posters. Add a common sense section and you've cut out another 20%.  |

| I have no problem with the HIV test but it should be broadened to everyone who wants to work here. |

In Mr. L.A's defense I do believe he is referring to my original post in which I said "Is it also good that nobody outside of English teachers here and their families back home will really care?" (But then I considered that this might be taken as sarcasm and so I edited it to make the meaning clearer)
That said your remark about the reading test still has validity as it was a question and not a statement as Mr. L.A is attempting to make it look above. Not only that but I also mentioned English teachers' families back home so I'm not sure where he gets the "outside of South Korea" from. That's strictly his creativity/imagination speaking. |

There have been two or three such stories in the Korean papers about foreign teachers on E-2 visas and the AIDS/drug tests . If memory serves me right one such article provoked Immigration to such an extent, the regional head apparently felt called upon to issue a rebuttal which basically stated that the tests are here to stay.
And as for your hopes of embarrassing Korean lawmakers...I would say that if the fear of embarrassment in foreign newspapers doesn't stop them from brawling while in session, this TIME story isn't going to cut the mustard. |

What makes you think that the policy-makers are embarrassed by any of this? Evidently, said polcy-makers are proud of their prejudices. The only reaction you'll get is either they'll completely ignore the foreign press or they'll complain that the foreign press "doesn't undersand Korean culture."

Well... fair enough. Though I think they probably write the fights off as a cultural difference.
