|
|
| i recently learned from a friend that at incheon airport he was informed that as an american traveling to america (he is a resident of korea) he could not purchase accident/medical insurance. this was a surprise to him (and me) as we have always been allowed to do this in the past. does anyone have info on this? and, if it is no longer possible to purchase at the airport, where can it be purchased? |

The quickest, cheapest, most reliable place to get it is through World Nomads. You can buy it in just a few minutes online.
About them not selling to an American going to America, it is likely due to something like this (travel insurance won't cover you in your home country).

| Your country of permanent residence can be defined as the country you would wish to be repatriated to in the event of a medical emergency and where you would be able to then receive long term medical care, if required. You must also be legally defined as a permanent resident (not temporary) of that country and have a residential address that you can refer to within that country. Please be aware, however, that your policy does not cover expenses incurred within your country of permanent residence. |
You can contact World Nomads, and they will tell you exactly what coverage you should get. If you wouldn't mind, please visit them via my blog.

When you say "accident/medical insurance" you mean travel insurance, right? I'm not sure if you can get it at Gimpo, but, even if you could, why would you when you can buy it cheaper from the comfort of your own home? I hate having another hassle at the airport?

I did purchase it just hours ago from the comfort of my home -
http://forums.eslcafe.com/korea/viewtopic.php?t=199003
However, nobody answered my question about "Do I have to pay upfront" (at the hospital in the event of an accident)
so I thought purchasing another Travel insurance would be safer (having 2 - at least one would perhaps pay the hospital fee - without me paying upfront?)
I don't know how it works..
I just don't want to hear a doctor saying "We will ONLY perform the life-saving procedure if you pay upfront now!"
and then even if they did perform [whatever] - I wouldn't be able to afford to wait around 14 days to make a claim to the insurance company.
Do Insurance companies pay the hospital directly (immediately) or do I have to pay upfront first? |

The insurance company answered my questions -
We are emailing you regarding your question about who pays the hospital bills if a medical emergency should arise.
The policies are on a reimbursement state. However, if there is a very large covered medical claim, the insurance company will make arrangements to pay the necessary medical expenses. They will ask if you have any other way of paying for the medical expense, such as a credit card. The reason for this is the insurance company would need to verify that the reason for the medical claim is a valid and covered claim. |

| I use Squaremouth.com for travel insurance and try to help myself as much as possible using my internet as most anything in Korea caters only to Koreans. I can easily believe OP had problems. I understand nearly all policies are reimbursement only plans with the exception that ER and emergency medical evacuation are taken care of in-country as you may not have $100,000 cash to handle that turkey of a situation. Despite there being insurance, traveling abroad in a 3rd world country would be a horrible time to fall ill. The great adventure is worth the risk as long as you take care. I would be more comfortable if I had someone back home to call on if I ever really needed a helping hand from suffering some unforeseen trouble. My moma worries about me, but trusts I can do it since I believe I can. |
