I have a friend of a friend who owns a study room and claims to make over 10,000,000KRW/month. This is conceivable since you can charge upwards of 200,000KRW per student and all you need is 50 of them. Also, you don't need a license and you needn't pay taxes until you make over 10,000,000KRW/month. This person has a nice ground floor apartment in a large apartment complex where he has been teaching freelance for years. He has an F-2. I also have an F-2 and consistently make between 5-6M KRW/month. But staying home and clearing 10M/month seems to me to be the way to go. Also, I feel 5-6M KRW/month is a little bit like a glass ceiling for freelance work. Anyone have experience doing this?

I met a Korean who had a study room. He said that the amount you make in a month depends on a lot of stuff like, location, how nice the place looks, and most importantly the time of year. He said that it fluctuates a LOT depending on exams periods and such. Still, he said that he preferred it to running a hogwan.

I knew a korean guy running one....he tutored me in Korean using it.

first of all, your friend of a friend is working an Illegal business!
if he was ever caught he would be fined and back taxes would be paid,.
please be advised, running a study room has its limitations. you are only allowed to charge per student what the STATE says.
of course running the study room illegally, hey, so be it...

I knew of a Korean guy who was clearing 150 million a month from his study room in Daechi dong. thats right... 150 million won.. you read that right.

A MONTH! but he eventually got caught. and the IRS came down on him real hard. and his room is now closed.

foreigners who teach privates for 50.000 an hour..
thats illegal... TAX free money..
the mother and the teacher can both be in trouble if caught.
but this is Korea. and crimes are broken by everyone everyday.

Say, working 10 hours a day, that's 500k/hour.

No, I remember some Korean American getting busted in Gangnam for operation an illegal cram school for the soonung (Korean SAT). He was pulling in 10,000,000/student for about 3 months intensive classes. I tried to search this on the Korean Herald and Times, but unfortunately their search function is worse than this one. He was a special case. He was widely known in the neighborhood and he already had an extremely expensive apartment in Gangnam to work from.

I'm talking about a study room. I see them ALL the time and I see them ADVERTISING all the time. So if it is ILLEGAL, then the cops, or whoever, must be blind, don't care, are getting paid off, or all of the above.

Anyways, like I said. I'm gonna smash my way through that glass ceiling.

I run a legal Study Room; registered with the dong office. I've been doing it for four years now. It is a legit business and it has paid well. It has its ups and downs and while 10million is certainly not impossible, it would be difficult to make that much. Alot of people, tend to exaggerate their income. I can say now, that living in Songdo, it has become very difficult to drum up students these days. Perhaps, I'm not working as hard as I should, maybe I'm a shitty teacher... But I really think it's the fact that I took a holiday to Canada this summer and have not been able to get more students. Also, the market is not good and the fact that Songdo has exploded withan insane amount of Hogwons lately.

Still, I only work from 3:00pm to 8:00 pm and with my uni gig, I make a fair amount of money by EFL teachers standards. Not 10 mil though.

I would recommend moving to a newer place where not many foreigners live and I would recommend at least a 42 pyeong apartment. You and your wife will have to deal with nonsense from moms, a little more often, if you have kids like me, it will be a bit hectic, but it is great to be finished and not drive through traffic. I spen a good deal more time with my family as well because of it.

You can get a Study Room License from your Local Dong office.

You simply need to show your Visa, degree and fill out a dew forms.
