I have Spring camp from Monday the 14th to the 25th in the mornings. They want me to focus on reading and story telling more so than simply doing fun activities like in Winter camp. It will be the same 5th and 6th grade students I had during Winter camp so I already know that they are a great group of students with their excessive shyness and paranoid unwillingness to speak my only disappointment in them. I did one reading and writing activity in January with them, but they were quickly bored to death with it so I moved onto fun activities like making snowmen and snowflakes.

Any ideas on teaching reading and storytelling in camp? It's easy to teach academics during the semester, but I find student motivation for academic material difficult to conjure up during the vacation periods. I have a room full of English books, but they are mostly appealing to kindergarten through 3rd grade and not so interesting for the big kids. Help me please...

Make them write a journal everyday about what time, where and when they did something the day before. Then they can draw a picture by picture story book. 5-6 boxes long.

Give assigned short stories 2 a day with comprehension worksheets. And make em do a VERY simple presentation every other day about which story of the 4 they read they liked the best.

Like: I read a story called ________

It was about _______ (If it's too hard, its about person X)

I liked or did not like the story
