if dont know if its been revealed, but the ~ is used for extending vowel sounds. like aaaaaaaaaa = 아~~

so if a girl texts "this is jiyoung~" she's saying "this is jiyouuuuuuuuuung?"

i think it's just a typing habit they've got.

I couldn't live without ^^ at this point. I think emoticons are great because it's so easy to clarify the tone of a message with them. I have had more than one typed message in an email misunderstood, and text messages because of space limitations have even greater potential to seem terse. A tiny, two-character ^^ solves that problem so nicely!

I agree though with annoyance when they devolve into mere habit and lose meaning.
