written by a Kyopo male? Or at least illustrated by a kyopo male...?
Why are all the depictipns of esl teachers fat ugly women or thin pimply ugly males?
And several posters do no find that stereotyping offensive?
Now I fit none of those categories, but why did they have to represent esl teachers like that. Myself and most of my male friends at least are all decent looking guys who certainly aren't nerds.
I don't know, but why was that neccesary...? |
I am pretty sure the illustrator used his real name. I worked with a guy named Pat Volz, who wanted to get into cartooning while in Korea. I am pretty sure it's him. One of the people in the illustrations may be a caricature of himself, if I remember correctly. I don't think it was intentionally malicious.
Why is the fat chick in the bottom left hand corner excited over the remote control? I don't get that reference. Is she going to eat it? |

At first I thought it was a Wiimote and she was at a cafe, but then I saw the weird sound thing and I think she is taking a picture of herself in the style of SIFs and Korean girls on the bus. |

Oh come on, it's a cartoon. Of course the characters are going to have exaggerated physical features. And what is a nerd exactly? isn't that the sort of terminology people grow out of after high school. A name they call the brainy kids at school who go on to do science at university and get all the well paid jobs?
I'm with Steelrails on this one, the guy should take his own advice. He's using the excuse that newbies always go on about the same old stuff to go on about the same old stuff. And it's as dull as it would be coming from a newbie. |
really catflap. Then why didn't they have exaggeratedly cool features?
so as long as I exaggerate the features, I can draw cartoons of koreans in publications with flat faces, sloping foreheads, gnarly teeth, slanty eyes, hawking, spitting etc... without causing offense?
Oh cool!
Just so long as it is exaggerated..... |

Isn't the slanty eyed, hunched back guy with the magnifying glass supposed to be Korean? |

10 magazine is a new venture by Stephen Revere. Stephen is one hell of a guy. He learned Korean fleuntly and taught it on a show "let's speak korean" on Arirang TV. These shows are on youtube and I still use them to brush up my Korean.
Stephen's contributions on the show are wonderful. He gives clear explanation combined wih razor sharp wit to make these shows not just educational but entertaining.
That goes to show his motivation and intellect. He has a number of learning Korean books published. An amazing accomplishment. Now seemingly he is an entrepreneur as well.
There are very, very few foreigners that get my respect in Korea but Stephen Revere is one of them. |

I'm familiar with Stephen Revere. He obviously needs to edit his magazine in a professional manner. Maybe it was just a mistake on his part....I would hope so. Would hate to think he would give a crappy article like that a thumbs up. |

Right, heads up....you are a total cliche and every observation you make about Korea has been made before, so us other expats all roll our eyes at you.
Heads up, here is some condescending advice that provides no actually helpful information.
Another article by this literary genius can be found here:

Did you see the size of those Korean noses in the cartoon, and the geeky looking glasses? Very offensive

Actually it tells you how to grope women up on the subway and get away with it. Very useful |

Good read, if not a tad optimistic.
(The article, that it.) |

| I have a feeling that the old Stephen guy from Arirang who runs the magazine after quitting Arirang for the typical crap a K-company does to its employees (he told me) is getting frustrated with his lot here. Just my opinion... |
