Normal to use it (or a copy of it had you been smart enough to use one instead) = YES.
Are they likely to hold it hostage = also yes.
Wait a week then ask for it back. If they won't then put up a stink and quit teaching (sit at your desk) till you get it back.
Next time use a photocopy.

They do need to register it at the ministry of education office, but it was not necessary to give them your original - a copy would have sufficed. The education office would have made a copy and returned the original immediately. Your employer should have the original and if they say they dont, they are lying. |

As a backup plan, go online, order a new degree/diploma from your school just in case. Some schools only take 1 week, while others take 4-6 weeks.
It's like $20-$50

Classic shady hagwon move. Never, ever give your original diploma to ANYONE. They will use it as ransom. |

My recruiter is also saying the same thing. That I need to bring the original with me when I get on the plan to Korea. Would I be able to just bring a copy instead? Or do I NEED the original? |

Bring it, but never let anyone put their hands on it. If they say it needs to go somewhere for something, say 'Sure, but I go with it or you can take a copy.' That also means YOU make the copy. IT NEVER LEAVES YOUR HANDS or there is a good chance you will never see it again. |

Agreed. I could care less what some scam-artist recruiter or hagwon owner says, you're not touching my diploma. You should treat your diploma like your passport. You wouldn't want that floating around in someone elses hands now would you? |

Couple years ago I was getting ready to apply for a new job and suddenly couldn't figure out where my diploma was in my apartment. Searched every corner, and was almost convinced the ajuma cleaning lady had stolen it. Freaked out, and finally called my boss...conversation followed:
ME: Hey, do you guys have my diploma? I can't seem to find it.
BOSS: Yes.
ME: Oh great! I was scared it got stolen. Can you get that back to me?
BOSS: Why do you want it?
ME: Ummm, cause it's mine.
BOSS: But why do you want it, are you applying for a new job?
ME: Uh, it's mine, and I need it back...please drop it off today or tomorrow.
Some bosses like to think they own you...they shouldn't need it for anything more than a month...my first job out here I got it back with my ARC... |
