I remember Newport (the nearest city) was once the most dangerous place in Britain (no of violent incidents per square mile), it also had the highest heroin overdose in Britain, and one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in the whole of Europe! It's reward? The Queen made it a city! That was almost ten years ago and I don't think it's changed in the slightest.
Very few Muslims in my hometown. If you want to see one you have to go and look for one! |

i've been sitting here for a while trying to explain how to pronouce either of these places without using the 'w' or 'll'. still can't figure it out..explaining welsh isn't easy |

The W is like the "u" in 'put' (stress is on the 2nd syllable of Cwmbran) |

I don't know the UK that well. But from my limited and removed perspective, they need more religion. Say what you will about Evangelicals in the States (I'll agree with most of it), but their religious ties and observance really brings their communities together.
There are other ways to do it, perhaps. But the UK seems to have a host of problems.

I don't know. There are plenty of pockets of tradition and the past all over the Western world. But I suppose the UK would be the most 'modern.'
I had a very cool British roommate in Beijing who I told that American English is closer to the English once spoken in Great Britain than today's British English (before it was the UK). He nodded and said proudly, "Well, that's because we're more ahead." The reason I tell this story is because his comment brought Nietzsche to mind. Why should we blindly prefer everything about modernity, or even worse, "progress" or just bland "change"?
The modern world is humongous, and there are more pockets of Renaissance/Classical thought today than there were in the past, if you go by pure numbers. Just look at all the Great Books or classical liberal arts colleges tucked away in many states throughout the US. I mean, it would be terribly modern of us to reject entirely the "O brave new world! That has such people in it!" Even if there are only a few million classicists or traditionalists or what have you, it should be more than enough to populate thousands of communities. |

| To be fair, I've calmed down considerably since then. Besides, the dream is of a sacred civilization, not a community of four-eyed 'classicists'. Rest assured that we aren't sitting on our hands. |

Countries in western Europe have highers rates of atheism but lower rates of crime.
Maybe returning to faith might help but a lack of faith cannot be blamed. |
