Hi all,
I'm doing a lesson on articles and took a worksheet from 'eslpdf.com*' (quite a good website, actually! i just stumbled across it tonight).
While I was reviewing it and preparing explanations as to why x article is used (or not used) in y situation, I came across a few sentences for which I can't articulate the rules...thanks in advance for any help!
3. Have you seen ___ my scarf.
^Does this sentence not get an article because it's already definitely referring to the scarf which I own (so 'the' would be redundant?) or is for another reason?
7. I have several ___ good friends.
9. I'll see you in _a_ week.
10. I'm on ___ vacation until Monday.
Thanks again for any insights!

One way to view this is from the perspective of determiners.
Articles are just one form of determiner...and can be replaced with other forms of determiners.
3. - (my) - possessive determiner.
7. - several...(quantifier)...though with friends as a plural count noun...it doesn't take an article..even if several were dropped.
I have friends.
9. (a) - is substituting for (one) - again - a quantifier.
10. can take an article...depending on context.
I'm on the vacation of a lifetime. (specific article)
I'm on a vacation until Monday. ( a type/kind of vacation in general)
(i.e. I was drunk at work on Thursday, so they sent me home for the weekend without pay...but I don't want my wife to find out...so...)
or without an article(zero article)
I'm on vacation until Monday. ( general concept)
Hope this is useful. |
