Hi,

I've been having some trouble find out where to get apostilles done for my CRB and degree. All I seem to be able to find is dodgy looking websites charging from �30-�80 per document?

Where is the best and most reliable place for this? Is anywhere quicker than others?

You need to get documents notorised and apostilled. So asuming you need both doing;

For notorising;
If you find a public notary, depends where you live, they shouldn't charge you any more than �5-10. Try using gumtree or other smaller local listings if possible.

Law firms will charge you �50-60 because they know they can, luckily I know a lawyer who did it for nothing, but still it's a ballache.

Getting them apostilled: The worst bit
You need to send them to the FCO (foreign commonwealth office in Milton Keynes who will apostille it, these are the only people who can do it legally.

I kind of figured that the other websites saying were probably just trying to 'middle man' me. I'd found the Foreign and Common Wealth office website but it's a pain to find any actual info on, oh well at least I know I'm looking in the right place.

As for "public notary", that's solicitor to us, so just go down to any solicitors and ask them to certify your documents as geniuine/a genuine copy and you're ready to send them to the FCO at Milton Keynes. If the Solicitor just signs the back it's not good enough for the FCO.

Depends on where you live, but a well-recommended Notary Public is Kidd Rapinet solicitors - They're right behind Charing Cross station in central London. They're used to people requiring notarization for visa purposes and will only charge �5, it'll only take a couple of minutes to do as well.

The ONLY place you can get the apostille is from the FCO in Milton Keynes. I have checked and checked around, and that is the only option for Brits. You can accomplish the whole process online/via mail if you wish.

If you get a CRB check from Disclosure Scotland, you can get it notarized at no extra charge if you request it from them.

If you are not too far from Milton Keynes, I would suggest taking all your docs to the FCO, sussing out a solicitor that's nearby. There are plenty of accounts of an inexpensive solicitor pretty much next door to the FCO. Just don't use the word 'notarization' and apparently they won't charge the full whack.

Well I was all set to travel to Milton Keynes tomorrow. However I checked the FCO website and the counter where you used to get apostilles seems to now be closed and all application must be by post.

Now my cousins are lawyers. Can they notarize my criminal records check and diploma then I just post them to Milton Keynes?

I think you need to be a certain type of lawyer to act as a notary.

To be honest I ended up paying a notary to sort it all out for me in the end. Cost about �50 more than it would of if I sorted it all my self, but he offered the Apostille service and I got sick of trying to work out what I was suppose to be doing.
