KAIST's president is really in the spotlight now. They used to offer scholarships to everyone but they changed recently to offer scholarships only to people who earned above a B average.

I have students begging for grades at my university. I can't imagine what it would have been like at KAIST. Especially since the students there represent the top 1 percent of Korea, and my students getting A's are the ones begging for an A+. Students at the higher levels represent the bulk of my complainers.

If this guy caves to the will of a bunch of losers, he will lose my respect eternally.

Whining kids don't want to work hard and want their education for free. No such thing as a free lunch.

That's a little harsh. I think a lot of these kids are used to failure or maybe I just can't afford it.

Things don't look so good in the South Korean university scene.

That's because 82% of high school students go on to college. Then, once they are in college, getting above a B average is easy.

Professors in a lot of Korean universities are afraid of losing their jobs. This was not the case a few years ago because being a university professor meant a job for life and many of them slacked off. Nowadays, due to a demand for higher standards of education, professors must get evaluated often and this includes student evaluations. Well, in an effort to increase student evaluation scores, a lot of professors hand out good grades like candy. It's a you scratch my back and I'll scratch your scenario.

That's why your students who have A's are begging for A+'s. A's just aren't that great and dont set you apart from other students.

Now, this leaves us with a nation where almost ALL of the young people go on to college and graduate with above a B average. WTF? Everyone can't be a doctor, lawyer or CEO, but they all think they can.

Now, to top it all off, when they get out of school, they don't want to accept a job doing "manual" labor. They want that dream office job, because their college degree cant be wasted working in a restaurant. However, the number of these jobs are very limited, leaving 1.3 million young college graduates currently unemployed in Korea.

Right, I mean why bother giving grades at all??

6 million won is hilariously cheap compared to school stateside. If kids in the states were as weak and pathetic as your average Korean university student, 50% of university students would be jumping off of buildings and overdosing.

Argh! Burned by google voice again. I meant to say they are not used to failure, or maybe they just couldn't afford it.

My friend told me typical K parents call down their own children when they fail. Call them a loser and whatnot.

They'd better get used to failure. After the fiasco that is high school and between military srrvice, these kids need a gap year culture,
